Improving State of Delhi Metro: Addl Inputs

Below are the key issues and solutions as proposed by you for improving the state of Delhi .Metro. Kindly review and share any specific additional inputs you have. We will then share the whitepaper with DMRC, Ministry of Urban Development and Delhi Administration so actions can be taken to improve Delhi Metro.

Improving Delhi Metro – Key Solutions

1. The maintenance of the vending machines should be improved to make sure that they are always in a working condition
2. Airport like token system could be introduced in the metro baggage checking to minimize the incidents of passengers losing their luggage
3. 2-3 metal detectors should be opened during peak hours to shorten the queues
4. More feeder buses should be operated to connect people to the metro stations
5. Women should be prohibited from occupying seats reserved for the elderly
6. The usage fee of the toilets on the metro stations could be increased to improve their lighting and cleanliness
7. The fare on the airport line should be reduced to boost ridership
8. A flying squad should be created to fine people traveling in the wrong direction just to occupy seats
9. Ads should be put on metro stations to educate passengers on giving seating priority to ladies and senior citizens even if they are not sitting on seats reserved for them
10. CCTV footage should be monitored to catch pick-pockets
11. TVs should be installed on the platforms to show information about the train status for the next hour
12. Ad campaigns should be done to improve the civic sense among the metro commuters
13. Metro management needs to adopt a tougher approach with delinquent passengers
14. Machines should be enabled and effectively maintained for dispensing new cards
15. A change dispensing machine could be installed on the metro stations to deal with the money change crunch that often happen with passengers/ticketing staff.

State of Delhi Metro - Key Issues

1. One is unable to buy smart cards from the vending machines and is forced to stand in queue
2. There are frequent cases of passengers losing their belongings on the x-ray scanner
3. Long queues to enter the station during peak hours
4. The last-mile connectivity to the metro is not very good
5. Major stations like Rajeev Chowk are almost always congested and over crowded
6. Women tend to occupy seats reserved for senior citizens even though one compartment is reserved for them
7. Wash room facilities at metro stations are not up to the mark
8. The fare on the airport express is still high
9. Not enough senior citizen seats reserved in the coaches
10. Passengers travel in the wrong direction just to occupy seats
11. Passengers are mostly inconsiderate when it comes to senior citizens/women with kids
12. Pick-pocket cases are common at metro stations
13. Passengers crowd near the doors even when there is ample space inside the coach
14. There is no train arrival announcement on platforms
15. There is no display TVs on the platform informing passengers about train status
16. The volume of announcements in trains is too low to be audible amidst all the noise
17. The visual indications on MAP above the doors for metro origin - current station & destination are often non-functional
18. Women and Kids that are traveling in general coaches do get squeezed during rush times. more

I think there should be more exit and entry token machine in all metro stations. There should be all 8 coaches trains at huda city centre - Jahangir puri and Noida- dwarka route and all 6 coaches at rithala- dilshad garden track. Frequency should be 2 minutes in day time and 4 minutes in night at all tracks more

I would like to add more issues to the State of Delhi Metro key issues: 1) The standards of cleanliness of the stations has gone down very much, particularly the ones far flung from the Central Stations; 2) The auto drivers instead of standing in the queue for the passengers to hire and go as per the order of the queue; 3) The compounds of the metro stations are very much lit-erred with refuse - just have a look at the AIIMS station on both of its sides, aiims and safdarjang. The site is very dirty, and the adjoining spaces have been occupied by the unauthorised eateries and other vendors. This is happening with full concurrence of the Police and the Councillor. These sites must be cleaned up immediately; 4) At aiims station, people have started occupying the corridors of the concourse, beggars abound sitting on wheel chairs. Despite complaints to the station in-charge and online nothing has changed. more
