Improving State of Pharmacies - Solutions

Below are the key solutions as proposed by you for improving state of pharmacies in Delhi.

Please review and if you have any additional inputs, please share them.

Improving State of Pharmacies in Delhi

1. Commissions/margins on medicines should be reduced so that medical stores are not able to pass on heavy commissions to doctor
2. It should be mandated for the pharmacies to stock generic medicines
3. There should be proper identification of generic medicines as well as control on their MRPs
4. Like in western countries, pharmacies should not sell medicines until the patient has a prescription
5. Surprise checks should be made at the pharmacies by drug inspectors
6. In case fake drugs are found, the license should be immediately cancelled
7. Inspectors caught taking bribes from pharmacies should face severe punishments including suspension/termination
8. A bill should mandatorily be provided for all medicine purchases
9. Doctors’ accepting money/kickbacks from pharmacies must be made an offense
10. A licensed pharmacist should always be available at a pharmacy
11. Organizations like DMA should be encouraged to learn more about the generic prescriptions
12. Government should set up pharmacies which sell generic medicines only
13. Government website/mobile app should be developed which could tell the generic alternative to a costly medicine more

There is no discussion about duplicate medicines which are normally sold by chemist more than 25% of the sale. There is total setting with drugs control inspector, local doctor, police to do all these activities otherwise it will be difficult ot sale a duplicate /alternate medicines. 90% people do not have the knowledge of these kind of medicines and they have no option to rely on chemist or doctor. more
when all the recommendations are likely to be implemented? The CGHS system needs thorough revamp. The beneficiaries of CGHS are contributing every month from their pockets but few get quality service even getting new CGHS cards take years. I have applied for more than a year but still not got the delivery at door-steps. What's the problem in this age of e-governance. The quality of doctors are much desired to be qualified. This includes specialists. The generic medicines are not even available in Pharmacy located in Shastri Bhavan building. The Cilnidipine is not available in CGHS except amlodipine which cause reaction like swollen feet. Why Cilnidipine is not made available in the CGHSt which is better drug without side effects cannot be understood. There are similar problems in regards to other drugs. The Homoeopathic and Ayurvedic CGHS wellness centres are the worst. They don't have medicines for patients who regularly need for continuation. Many times the patients come back home without medicines because these are not available due to non-supply. Can there be a system of allowing patients to buy from outside with reimbursement system. The Homoeopathic clinics don't keep quality medicines and these are not effective except probably act as a placebo. These are my experience. Even the Directors of CGHS are all too bureacratic, insensitive, incompetent, lethergic to solve patients' problems. They are always in meetings in the Minsistry. Whether they are really or so? Let there be accountability, Responsibility and Transparency (ART) infused as PM has rightly coined the term. Who will bell the cat except the Health Minister and his Secretary. Are you listening the agony of the patients. more
Crowdsourcing is good. But all suggestions should be vetted by a committee of experts. This committee should have persons who have deep knowledge, but no vested interest. These could be, for example, NGO founders in relevant area, say health. Industry experts and DMA should also be allowed to make presentations to the expert group so the pharmacists are not so pressurized that they stop selling the generics, or follow some other unethical practices in place of the existing ones that are banned. more
The above shall need to be enforced very strictly in order for it to be really effective. If these steps are taken, I am sure it will revolutionize the sate of pharmacies. more
