Improving Timeliness of Trains - Inputs on Solutions

Below are the Key Issues and Root Causes as outlined by you for lack of timeliness of trains in India.
Kindly review them and help identify solutions to them.
We will then compile them for the Railway Minister and Leadership team for their review and actions.

Timeliness of Trains – Issues and Root Causes:
1. Many tracks are still single
2. There are insufficient platforms at many busy stations
3. Many trains start later from the originating station
4. Engine technology is old and breakdown frequently
5. Power outages also hamper the running of electric trains
6. Lack of timely technological advancements in the sector
7. Many railway tracks are old and susceptible to wear and tear
8. Accidents on unmanned railway crossings
9. Premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi are given preference over normal trains resulting in delay
10. People pull chains needlessly, delaying the train’s running schedule
11. Poor/low visibility results in train delays
12. Our network in unable to run in fog
13. Maintenance staff is lazy and quality is sub standard
14. Railways are not answerable to anyone for the delays
15. Un-necessary stoppages at non-important stations to appease local politicians
16. Many political marches block railway tracks leading to train delays
17. Many times, guards themselves delay the train for loading / unloading of parcels / goods more

Some time ago i felt that in winters most of the time trains are late coz of fog but in summers It is harder to understand what has happened. When recently this issue has been raised in parliament by govt bt railway remained unanswered. They even don't take cognigence on there failure and Parliament need to interfere in it. This is wakeup call for Indian railway. I feel railway traffic should be given to private player on trial basis. So that new innovative ideas could be implemented in system. Thanks more

Railway minister himself accepted the existence of corruption and mismanagementin the Rajya Sabha(print media report) ., and he has informed that this will be put an end. The best way is privatization of certain sector of the railways, certain functions of the railways, where by the past mistakes of previous government cannot be continued. more

The Indian Railways should improve technology for Anti-collision technique, Poor visibility removable technique, detection of track cracks well ahead of some KM distance, signal failure prevention technique, etc The technology engaged in western countries and advanced easter countries like Japan, etc should be studies by Engineers only and not by politicians who go abroad for sight seeing only.(pl.note the foreign study trip by Bangalore politicians affair) more

1. Delay maybe due to delay in green signals at the stations. Which could be due to logistic delays at the station. 2. Many of the times delays are caused when trains are made to wait for the other train to cross due to single track. more

Platform ticket vending machines can be installed at parking lots also. So that people can buy while parking vehicles and rush at windows can be reduced. more
