Improving Women Safety in Railways

Below are the steps taken by Indian Railways for safety and security of passengers including women passengers in trains. If you have additional inputs on what we can do further improve women safety, please do respond with specific inputs.

Current initiatives to improve Women Safety in Railways

1.On vulnerable and identified routes/ sections, 2500 trains (on an average) are escorted by Railway Protection Force daily, in addition to 2200 trains escorted by Government Railway Police of different States daily.

2.Security Help Line number 182 is made operational over Indian Railways for security related assistance to passengers in distress.

3.The train escorting parties have been briefed to keep extra vigil on the ladies coaches en-route and at halting stations.

4.Regular drives are conducted to prevent entry of male passengers in compartments reserved for ladies, and if found, they are prosecuted under the provisions of Railways Act.

5.Surveillance is kept through CCTV cameras, provided at about 344 stations over Indian Railways, to ensure safety and security of passengers.

6.The ladies special trains running in Metropolitan cities are being escorted by lady RPF constables.

7.The ladies compartments in sub-urban trains running in metropolitan cities are being escorted by RPF and GRP. Staff deployment is made during late night and early morning in such trains to ensure proper security to the lady passengers.

8.RPF holds regular coordination meetings with State Police at all levels to ensure proper registration and investigation of crime by GRP. more

1. Sir most of the initiatives or steps written here looks hypothetical. The real picture of the railways is that RPF personnel rarely visible in running trains. You accepts it or not but this is a reality. Women safety in trains is always on stake. 2. sleeper class coaches are treated like general compartments by people in most of the trains. I frequently travel in trains and found that in the absence of police personnel TTE found themselves helpless most of the day time travel. RPF is nowhere seen. And I observed that railway police is always a mute spectator in trains. They never bother about happenings in the train coaches and unauthorized passengers in sleeper coaches. And that is why the tendency to travel in sleeper class with general ticket is increasing. 3. Even AC3 coaches in some trains like Jhelam Ex. are becoming hell as a lot of passangers with general ticket bard the train and ask TT to allow. 3. Group of young boys harassing single female passenger in trains sleeper coaches has become a conman phenomena. Because anybody can walk free in reserved sleeper class coach. Journeying single young female passenger in Indian trains has become a nightmare experience. And it is a reality which I have seen many times. more
this is about the comment by mr. sunil prakash about the dirty coaches. I travel extensively by train to chennai, pune, mumbai and other places. Ihave seen that the second AC and thrid AC why even first ac comparments in trains other than mumbai zone are handed over coaches discarded by mumbai rajadhani, august kranti and other trains from delhi to mumbai and back. all the fancy coaches are only meant for these trains. Coaches in other trains are dirty and old toilets are shown are bio-toilets with opening through which the waste is dumped in the tracks. Food quality is nothing to be talked about and passengers are compelled to eat them. the quality changes when there are sudden(!) inspections. passengers must have seen the video forwarded around whatsup on how the contractors and railway staff recycle the staff and sell them to passengers. this need to be changed. more
It was a shock to travel in first class from Delhi to Kalka. Paid through my nose to seek comfort but was ashamed to travel in the coach where the seats were torn, broken, dirty. the food quality was horrible, the waiters serving were smelling foul with sweat and dressed up with unwashed aprons for months. the bathrooms were all broken, water trickling down and dirty. shame on our Minister and PM who talks of speed railways, when they cannot even maintain what is available and such high cost. more
I guess a day or two back incident on TV... a ladys phone was snatched and she was molested. THe same person had tried to snatch other laptops in the train. when the lady resisted the person got off the station and sat in another train/bogie ..however the police were found not taking any action. when a person is travelling the police needs to act fast as people may not be able to stop for the case to be resolved completely ex when there is a theft. the police need to get very professional and need to act swiftly. the process of recording FIR etc should be done with mobile devices. there should be swift coordination between TC, complainant, rail police, any police on board, train driver, station master. more
No need to wonder. Give punishment with out much trail Everything would be all right. As of today a goon know no punishment till 10/20 years he can manage during that period. Putting CCTV is no solution. more
