Increase fares. Fund shortages has help up the development of railways

dear sir,

root cause of the problems being faced by railways in the funds. As everyone is aware that for last 14 years no hike in passenger fares, while all the input cost of running the railwasy has increased many folds. it is foolish not to raise the fares. Need of the hour is safe guard railways and look beyond political mileage of keeping the fares low. more

Utopian objectives are beyond the Railways Railways are the lifeline and can't be just profit oriented when the Govt squander lakhs of crore distributing taxpayer's monwy to politically motivated causes knowing fully well of its futility and detrimental effect on national economy. Railways should boost income by.. Making AC class both 3AC and 2 AC more affordable and increaasing numver of such coaches in each train to attract more people who really pay. All state or railway employees should get their reimbursement from the respective department.instead of getting free travel pass. Travel concession should be applicable only to the weak and sick ... . Travel for treatment.. disability.. old .. and children below 12. There is little sense in railways bearing cost of sports ministry or ministry of social welfare for subsidised travel to sports persons and socially privileged.. Website should be customer friendly like online airtickets. Webbooking should be cheaper by 5 % compared to physical counter tickets. Reserving 40 p.c for Tatkal is too much Instead 120 days' advance booking should be cheaper and 10 p.c costlier at 30 days 15 pc at 15 days and 20 pc more when booked 5 days in advance. Tatkal quota shouldn't be more than 20 % of all tickets. Cancellation charges also should be reasonable and less .. especially for cancellation 15 days in advance. Say Rs 100 fir AC and 50 for Non Ac. Clerkeage shoukd be just Rs 50 fir AC and 30 for non AC. Scrap unethical dynamic fares. Plug the pilferage and boost revenue NOT by killing the hen that lays golden eggs .. that is the miiddle class .. AC 3 and 2 tuer. more  
Definitely railway has increased fare but in backdoor way. Tatkal/Premium Tatkal, Variable fare are few of the route. Also you can note all super superfast trains are being degraded every after few years with introduction of new train under new garb. But there is no respite in fare. Also does it require extra fund have a good e-ticketing system? If you cross check with air fare, very often airfare turns out very competitive compare to AC 2tire which was not prevailing even five years back. Railway has to become efficient, just increasing fare is no solution to inefficiency, disorder and indiscipline. more  
This will have an impact in Mumbai Locals.Locals are over crowded,whereas Best buses are under utilised.Because of over crowding in Locals a lot of accidents thefts,law and order problems are taking place.Once all the Metro routes start operating this problem is bound to increase as Metro fares will also be much higher than Locals. more  
There is a lot of ways to increase the revenue of railways instead of increasing the fare, please check the last 10 years of railway history how many times fares have been revised. Still you can see most of the general class of trains are overloaded because people below poverty line cannot afford the reserved tickets train cost, below are few inputs as per my experience where railway can check and if implemented surely they can increase their revenue without having the increased cost of tickets. 1) Identification of all unused railways properties and scraps and if it does not requires then sell it. 2) Strict vigilance must be made in all the reserved coaches of trains when TTE is examining tickets because still TTE are taking bribes and allowing passengers with general tickets in reserved classes. 3) All stations must be protected from trespassers and if found without proper tickets they must be prosecuted. 4) Fine must 10 times what railways is charging at present if passenger is found littering/damaging/destroying railway properties or travelling without proper and valid tickets, remember why indians are don't afraid in breaking law and order is because they don't have fear of getting penalized because they know they will be getting relaxation because of the bribe. 5) Strict law and order and rules must be applicable to all passengers/citizens and even all employees for violating law & order and rules. more  
With populist schemes railways was killed - Fudged accounts showing profits - It is high time rationality should be brought in - I have seen 100 to 150 times growth of rates as well as inputs for railways too but fares were hardly increased by 25 to 50 times. Some rationalisation should be brought in for better operational efficiency of Railways. more
