Increase speed of trains.
The Railways in future should concentrate on improving
1. Speed of the trains between destinations
2. Improve safety
3. Make railways more users friendly
4. Improve railway station safety
5. on time arrival of trains
6. Any other by expert advice
Presently, the railways is only concentrating on heavily investing in drawing railway lines at the cost of all the above mentioned.
How can Railways improve the speed between stations?
We have a lesson or two from the British Railways.
In the 1970s, British Rail began to explore new technologies for enabling high-speed passenger rail services in the UK. While the Japanese and French railway authorities had decided to build completely new tracks for their respective Shinkansen andTGV high-speed rail systems, British Rail opted instead to develop a train capable of running on existing rail infrastructure.
In 2002, British Rail with partnership of Alstom, global leaders in Railway Transport designed a train called Pendolino that enable them to run at high speeds of 225Kmph on existing rail infrastructure. Today this technology is being run in many European countries.
Indian railways shatabdi runs at 70 – 100 kmph. The journey from Mysore to Bangalore, a distance of 160Kms takes 2hrs 20 mins. Bangalore to Chennai it takes approx 5 hours a distance of 358 kms.
China Railway High speed (CRH) purchased technologies from Alstom to assemble 60 sets of high speed EMU trains, which have been named CRH5 and are based on the New Pendolino trains. The CRH5 are non-tilting trains. 30 additional sets were ordered in 2009 and 20 additional sets was ordered in 2010 to complete the current fleet operating on China's northern and eastern lines, operating at 250 kmph.
The need of the hour is to improve the present railway system, instead of aimless survey and laying of new railway lines. Indian Railways should have a MoU with alstom on a study and improving the speed of trains between destinations. more
