Increasing Freight Loading: Addl Inputs

Below are your ideas on what Railways should do to enable it to carry more freight and boost freight revenues. Higher freight loading will enable Railways to improve its finances as freight is 80% of revenue for Railways. Kindly review and if you have any more inputs, please share.

Increasing Freight Loading

1. Indian railways should adopt the Wireless Distributed Power system so that longer trains (2 to 3 times longer) can be run
2. Railways should implement consignment tracking system
3. Freight transportation should be made a separate entity under Railways so that it could be efficiently managed
4. Give Freight Transportation its right full Importance through media - one freight train carries load of 30 -40 Trucks. It is the Green Transport, in comparison to Road Transport. Lesser trucks on road will make roads safer
5. Show availability of rakes on line as well as future availability after arrival of next set of rakes
6. Market for return bookings of freight instead of waiting for walk in customers
7. Ensure safe and speedy delivery at destination
8. Systems should be automated and rake/wagons utilisation should be improved
9. Speed of the trains should be optimised to minimise the turnaround time
10. High Capacity Locomotives to haul more Tonnage with high speed need consideration
11. Railways are not preferred agency for transportation due to delay and thefts – we need to eradicate this completely
12. Adopt a commercial attitude to compete with road transportation
13. The stops that the freighter trains take should be minimised
14. Introduce Roll on - Roll off coaches
15. Pick up and drop facility for goods especially medium weight, could be introduced
16. The lengthy freight booking process should be revised. more

Point #1. What is Wireless Distributed Power System? Have you ever seen it anywhere? Nikola Tesla showed wireless street lighting a century ago, but do we have that sort of technology? Is it efficient? The reason I am asking this is sometimes we get too excited about something we read in Science Magazines, but it is better to test at small scale before recommending to others. Would appreciate if you can give some example of real implementation anywhere in the world, especially for high-power loads like trains. more
Very good. I wonder if it is yet to be implemented..! Can anyone guess what daily express and implied loss Indian economy and society has been suffering just by non-incorporation of these solutions timely. I estimate it to be equivalent to the revenue of GoI for same period. more
Very Good initiaves, to increase the revenue/load formulate a policy with timely delivery with commited date of delivery,This will add values to Railway. more
Integrate road transportation with rail freight corridor. Should reach the consignment through single booking and through integrated approach ensure faster transportation and quick delivery. Various private and professional agencies should be involved including etailoring companies to ensure hassle free movement of goods. Dedicated and modern warehousing needed to handle rail freight. Need high speed rail transportation including North West, East South connectivity, a 360 degree connectivity and rapid mass transist system for goods with dedicated freight corridor will ensure high speed rail connectivity and fast goods delivery with professional approach. The main problem is lack of professionalism, tedious process etc. make the matter worse. more
If an another track is made for freight than definitely it will be helpful for both passenger trains as well as goods train for timely movement. On allahabad-mughalsarai rail route it is often seen that passenger trains are stopped on the loop line for hours and goods trains are passed. more
