Indian Sweets and Adulteration

Is it true that many makers of Indian sweets are using sulphur dioxide, starch and aluminium to enhance their visual appeal and save cost at the same time.

Can experts please shed light on this. Our children as well as elders consume them almost through out the year.

What is the mandate for food inspectors when they go to food sweet shops. Do they test for such ingredients? more

Sulphur dioxide (a gas) or its generator sodium metabisulphite in food are century old food additives - as a preservative, sometimes as a bleach also. I have not come across about its adverse effects on human health. However, too much of everything is bad. Some asthmatic patents may feel uncomfortable if consumed in large quantities. Sulphur dioxide, as such (as gas) is harmful if inhaled in large quantities. more

Yes there are lots of Small, Medium and big Sweet shops at every places all over India. The quality is obviously doubtful. During Diwali festival the price also soared . There is no Checking system of the quality, quantity and Price by any Govt agency. There are the departments like Food & Drug Administers, Meteorological Depart. Etc. But no one have seen whether they are on action. more
