Indoor Air Quality Standards needed

A version if my post in Delhi circle is being shared here.

America and Euope have standards for Indoor Air Quality and we need Consumer Ministry or standards bureau to develop the same. I am not aware of such standards in India.

The indoor air is generally way more toxic than outdoor air. This is due to additional load of indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and radiation. Most indoor air pollutants are proven or suspected carcinogens. Indoor air pollution becomes even more critical in air-conditioned spaces as the limited ventilation and air change traps pollutants and builds up their concentration, increasing exposure and health hazard.

This is one of the reasons why America and Europe have stringent indoor air quality standards for their buildings as they are aware that even with cleaner air outside, their people can get really sick because of indoor air pollution, heightened by air conditioning. In India, we have no indoor air quality standards to start with. There it is recommended to open the windows for few hours daily to let the toxins out. more

As such air pollution in India is rampant,efforts should be made to control it.Strict law implementation and punishment is a must.Our politician/vote bank politics must support it.As in Delhi most of the air pollution is due to wrongful activities of neighbouring states. more

Since India has huge population (un-manageable), we cannot compare indoor air quality with USA/UK as they have got very small population and the standard of living of every citizen is good. In India, 4-6 people reside in one room/jhuggi. They burn fire wood, kerosene, coal as fuel for cooking. Population density in general is very high. Unless the Central and State Governments devise a mechanism to invest heavily on controlling population and bring it down to 75 crores, nothing is going to change. his target can be achieved easily by sparing funds by curtailing wasteful expenditure on governance. Right sizing and down sizing all Govt. departments will make an additional contribution as E governance has made 40% man power as surplus. more

Pollution of indoor air is a burning issue of today's world. With growth of concrete and metal friendly shelters and boxed dwelling tradition, present civilization has created a mountain of pathogens, say algae, fungus, bacteria; and more dangerously virus, as a death nail for itself. People don't get clean air and clear sunlight from the natural sources from the out side of closed doors. Also the hobby of pet and bird lovers in side dwellings has added fuel to burning issues of eye, throat and lung infection, skin irritation and so many disorders in human body. Beyond the domestic life, even in health care centers we are coming across heavy dose of unwanted dust, fumes and infections as well as cross-infections, in our day to day life. However, when there is no way to face this air pollution by natural and traditional modes, the modern science has suggested some precautionary and corrective ways in form of air purifiers or air sterilisers as a most successful equipment to combat the air pollution; but certainly you have to pay a hefty cost for the same. These air purifiers are certainly very useful for asthmatic people and children. Some of the companies, like manufacturer of BGM Air Sterilizers has used latest and advanced technology to produce these air sterilisers suitable for domestic, offices and health care centers. However, our aim should be to eliminate the basic factors causing the indoor pollution instead of searching the remedy. more
