Ineffective Indian Meteorological Department

IMD has a very important role and function in India, especially in forecasting rain and other weather parameters. India being a predominantly agricultural society, depends a lot of on set of monsoon, rain forecast and day to day prediction to help both farmers as well as citizents to be aware of likely dangers from excessive floods or disruption of daily life. Unfortunately, IMD does not have good record on meeting public expectations. Year after year, IMD has failed in providing timely forecasts and warning. Recent rains in Mumbai are testimony to IMD failure.

The issue is not just accurate forecasting. IMD has tons of data on its website but hardly of any use to common man. Just as it is very common in western world to predict hourly, daily predictions of rain or snow or cold front or heat waves, I wonder why IMD can not generate such reports and bulletis and share them to TV channels ? Sure in monsoon seasons, all citizens are interested in weather updates. I MD need tweak its reports city based like Mumbai region or Delhi or other metro cities, rural areas which depend on rain for sowing. Many a times, seeds get destroyed because no follow up rains. It is time that IMD shades it brahminikal attitude and claim that they know all and start sharing useful information to citizens. Then only public will appreciate the value of IMD otherwise it will always remain as an organization which fails every time during monsoons and leave public to defend themselves. IMD must become public centric and not self centric. more

One can check a satellite image for whether prediction and movement of clouds . Satellite image and animation is available on Internet . Type "IMD satellite image" you can get a image . This is helpful , but one has to analyze himself . Actually whether prediction is very tedious and complicated phenomenon. I don't know how many of human beings are able to understand it perfectly . Sometimes natural phenomenon becomes very difficult and reaches beyond the capacity of theories established by mankind . more
If you know IMD in details then you may not make all this type of statements. IMD has last 250 to 300 yeras of various types of data for rains, floods, wind speed, temp. in around India and coastal data, harbors various cyclones in and around India region and every year they prepare various modules for different fields and various applications for various areas. Daily updates to airline co.s,Indian air force on day to day & time intervals basis. Now, as per new era of Internet new analysis were accepted and started delivering various services. It includes use of various Radars place in and around India, satellite images and its analysis were accepted which helps in proper future natural warnings of various cyclones, natural disasters etc. No doubt some important predictions may differ from the details given by the IMD. In broad perspective Floods especially in Mumbai is man made activity not the by any other factor. Especially the construction activity carried out by the Builders Lobby with handshake of Ministers & various Govt. agencies. This group of companies & people -lobby destroyed sponging allowance(Kharvan/Mangros area) of sea & crick water & rain water which resulted in flooding of Mumbai. No has time to think & act about this critical natural factors present and will play important role in saving Mumbai by submerging into sea water and also in Rain water during heavy rains. Western ghats are very sensitive part in and around western part of India. If we made ecological changes by human interference on the name of progress & employment generation by introducing Industrial development then we have to pay heavy prize with shortage of rain fall, agricultural fall in o/p,dry seasons with coming new generation. The best e.g.Nanahar Project launched by Govt. of Maharashtra & central Govt. with overseas Investments. Already MIDC in Kokan regions like Thane, Rasayani,Mahad,Chiplun,Khed etc.(in Maharashtra region) have polluted rivers, air and heavy industrial & chemical waste dumping in the ecosystem creating a big k o as. Creation Green tribunal by Centre govt. have a adverse impact on various Govt. polices, projects as decisions started going against the Govt.polices,projects. Hence, now Appointments of Judges were kept on Hold by the Govt. so as to keep the various matters hanging. more

In IMD still there is lot of scope for improvements. They are very much far behind any of the developed countries. more
