Installing CCTV Cameras in Coaches - Inputs Sought

Safety and Cleanliness were highlighted as top priorities in a circle poll done late last year. Railways is looking at installing CCTV cameras in coaches with support from Nirbhaya fund of Ministry of Women & Child Development.

With this post we would like to seek your inputs on how CCTV system in coaches should work for high levels of effectiveness and how it can be best utlized to improve passenger safety and thefts.

We look forward to your inputs! more

CCTV will not be useful in darkness. For safety purpose intercom can be provided in each coach to contact Train Guard who can alert concerned TTE,police immediately.Mobile phone can also be used but Getting signal may be a problem. If both fail,Pulling chain is the alternative. more
Put automatic doors and then place CCTV cameras - Day train cameras to cover the entire the coach, night trains - to cover the doors & aisle. Along with automatic doors this can act as a huge deterrent for antisocial elements. more
Some people often write that the CCTV monitors should be connected to the driver. That is not a good idea. We should not distract the driver, or else there would be more accidents. Special security guards and the nearest station should have the monitors to watch the passenger compartments and possibly the driver, just to make sure he is not sleepy. Also monitors in the passenger compartment to show that the security guards are not sleeping. I am serious. BTW, in some countries the driver is required to push a pedal every minute to signal that he/she is alert, or else the train sounds alarm and slows down. Do we have that? more
many times it happens that on time passengers got birth instead of wait listed passengers, though he book ticket more early than on time passengers. to remove such things one can use the following way. there are so many states where bus booking is made by computerized system. if such system is also employed for wait listed passengers as well as on time travelling passengers and such device connected online to for accounting from the data received railway can get information regarding wait listed passenger confirmation as well as on time traveling passengers whose ticket is confirmed. from this data it can also find that how many wait listed are confirmed. and how many on time have got birth in the train. here as all thing is transparent and not manually did it will be easy to find. also wait listed passengers will got birth first. same head office can watch on particular TC. from next time ones he got found. i don't know much more about this system but at some extent it will work. more
