Integrating Swachh Bharat into School Education - Actionable Inputs

Dear all:

Since October 2nd, the biggest positive impact of Swachh Bharat has been on our next generation - children in schools. So much so that in many homes, kids are educating parents by example.

With this post, we seek your inputs on what all can be done to integrate Swachh Bharat principles into primary and secondary education curriculums .

Please give as practical and actionable inputs as possible with details.

We will put together a whitepaper which will be sent to Department of Education, Ministry of HRD as well as States for inclusion consideration.

We look forward to your inputs!

Appreciate that you are working on how to execute Swatch bharat at Indian Schools. My suggestion is to bring awareness to every student about cleanliness by practically cleaning surroundings, how to keep their bags, dress, shoes. how to provide each other a cleanly environment, practice yoga class to be part of every school. more

Though Swachh Bharat is a very good campaign and long overdue to improve our surroundings and environment but to make it successful and make every Indian involved in it we need to do some reality check. Lets be honest and ask ourselves whether involvement of celebrities and launching of campaigns after campaigns have made any material difference on the ground. To me it has no made no difference ,except that people talk about it a lot . The reason is simple - due to ingrained social prejudices majority of Indians have a deep rooted mindset as to "who" should be cleaning public places.Every one of us wants a clean place around us but we are not willing to pick up a broom or a mop to clean a public place barring during a photo ops campaign. In order to make Swachh Bharat campaign a reality and a voluntary movement we must make it a multi layered campaign emphasizing more responsibility on individual actions by following this top down approach: (1) Let us all agree to "act as a responsible citizen by not making public places dirty". Each one of us must carry a disposable bag when away from home or work place or travelling to dispose off the litter we create and finally disposing it off in a dustbin. (2) Let us all agree to "educate and discourage others from dirtying public places ". Each one of us must politely persuade a person dirtying a public place to desist from doing it. We must remember that keeping silent or looking the other way is not how a responsible citizen should act. (3) Let us all agree to "involve ourself in cleaning a dirty public place". The time has come to act and do our bit whenever we see a dirty public place. more
Cleanliness should started at home, and parents should teach children . This needs be or by creating awareness among parents.Parents are the first teacher, children can accept fast and parents also remain committed for swatchtha . Good housekeeping houses should be rewarded and presented before the remaining public, to create competition. more
When we talk of teaching any moral values including cleanliness in schools it must not be forgotten that the role models are the teachers and masters in schools. Swach Bharat also means a swach character which is lacking strongly in todays schools as is evident from frequent molestations of minor girls. Such people should not only be legally punished, they should be debarred from entering the school premises and poluting the atmosphere. Dr S.Sanyal more
