IRCTC Reservation Portal - Inputs on Solutions

Below are the key issues and root causes as identified by you for the current state of IRCTC reservation portal.

Kindly review them and help identify specific to do's/actions that can be implemented to improve the IRCTC Reservation Portal.

Once this is done, we will put together a comprehensive whitepaper and share with the Hon'ble Minister, Railways Board and CMD - IRCTC for implementation.

IRCTC Reservation Portal - Key Root Causes

1. The number of people that visit the portal is huge
2. Too many security features have been added to the portal
3. New features are being added to the site but they are not well planned
4. Some features on the portal are not explained properly
5. People are unaware of the TDR guidelines
6. IRCTC may not be well equipped to effectively running and scaling such a high traffic portal.
7. The site is not tested thoroughly before making the release live
8. Too many ads from Google provide for a poor user experience
9. Ministry and Railways do not have up to date industry people on staff and on board of IRCTC which is key to staying ahead of the curve.

IRCTC Reservation Portal – Key Issues

1. It takes a longer time to log in now
2. The CAPTCHA becomes pretty difficult to read
3. The portal has become a little confusing now
4. There is no way to book an onwards journey
5. The refund takes a long time to get processed
6. Selection of seats/berths is not allowed on the current website
7. No feedback or complaint section in the site
8. Senior citizens still cannot be guaranteed lower or middle birth while booking
9. Site logs out after every few minutes
10. IRCTC website becomes slow during the Tatkal period
11. The site also crashes many times
12. While booking, it is very difficult to figure out which classes are air conditioned
13. Once a person logged in with password, it asks password for each sub-section
14. The status of RAC / WL is not updated regularly
15. TDR takes months to clear and sometimes never even happens
16. Payment gateways are another bottleneck – payment gets rejected many times
17. No option of pre booking mean or even knowing if a pantry car exists in the train
18. Mobile booking not allowed from 8am to 12 noon
19. There is no option available for disabled person’s quota more

I am unable to understand how the berths are allotted when one books through the internet. My mother in law who is 83 years inevitably gets a upper berth when booked with one or more persons on the same ticket. I then have to make one or more bookings individually till the time a lower berth is allotted. I then cancel all other booked tickets and suffer cancellation charges. Why can't the IRCTC website show the berth allotted BEFORE the payment is made giving the facility to the passenger to accept or reject the berth offered. Alternatively, since the Railways want to compete with the airlines only in terms of fares (not facilities) why not modify the software so that the traveler can choose his berth just like an air traveler. more  
The advance booking period changed from 60 days to 120 days is definitely a retrograde step. Large number of The domestic train travelers find it difficult to plan 4 Months in advance and during good seasons tickets are cornered by some. It helps the Railways since they get an additional liquidity of funds equal to 2 months of All India Train booking capacity but passengers planning tours in less than 120 days are helpless. The doubling of cancellation charge is positive step since it will discourage multiple bookings. Can a middle way be found, like premium tatkal starting a week before departure date ? more  
Why not start a discussion on fining railways for delayed trains. Trains delayed by more than 10% of running time should be considered to be slower train ( e.g. Express trains to be considered as mail or passenger trains) & should refund extra payment to travelers who have suffered due to this. Sadbhawna train (12232/12231) is an express train but runs like a passenger train or even worse on most of days. Railways should be fined. Don't u all think so. Pl discuss in local circle. In IRCTC e tickets, only journey starting station date and time is displayed. passenger reaching destination arrival date and time is not displayed. Such information is available in PRS reservation tickets. Train ticket destination, arrival date and arrival time is to be displayed for the convenience of passengers in e tickets also. more  
Getting Tatkal ticket is still difficult for a person, who books tickets from his home, despite increased capacity. Please talk to NIC, the system provider. more
