Thane local consumer court has ruled that a person, who had taken an apartment on lease to reside for 11 months, is not defined as a consumer and cannot get protection under the Consumer Protection Act 1986. "If a tenant has any issue with the landlord after a flat has been given on lease, he should seek alternate legal remedy as stipulated in the Maharashtra Rent Act, 1999. However, a Tenant in a Co op Group Housing Society is a consumer under consumer protection act, availing services provided by the Coop Group Housing society and he can file for deficiencies against the Managing committee of the society. more
