IS DEMOCRACY FAILING?
One can notice in India, the rise in Regional parties since last three to four decades and failure of National parties to curtail the narrow tendencies of Caste bias and Regionalism and Religion bias. This leads to rise of several parties Whether Regional or New National parties. All this lead to casting votes in elections on bias, undue influence etc., but not franchising on fair principles of Democracy and not on real issues of importance to Nation and its common Citizens.
This leads to new tendencies in Politics of buying Voters with money, free bees etc. etc.,
But the most dangerous tendency now is that almost all parties are coming to a strategy of winning elections not on real issues but with undue influence and other undemocratic means. Most of the Election manifestoes are filled with Populist measures of free bees and doles to various vulnerable sections of the society to win the elections by hook and crook. This leads to a tendency of lesser means for real development or growth of the Nation. Most of the Government spending either Plan or Non plan is filled with these measures apart from essential expenses of running Governance (Salaries and Pensions).
In realistic terms most of the State Government Budgets are filled with these populist schemes and plans.
This is the high time all intellectuals raise to the occasion and raise their voice on all these retrograde tendencies which are harmful for Economic raise and Real & healthy growth in the Society. Other wise this leads to laziness and lethargy in common masses and unrest & lack of motivation in Middle classes and birth of new class of Upper echelons of society which is the real back bone of today’s unethical Political system. The side effects of above new trends in Indian Political system is already experienced in the Indian Society –
1. Shortage of Agricultural labour is noticed in the Rural India and 2. Reduced productivity in lower working class and 3. Raise in Taxes which impacts indirectly more on the poor and middle class. This leads to a tendency in masses for aspiring quick bucks without hard work and skill sets thereby next generations may become less motivated and less hard working and less creative, but to become rich with hook or crook.
To Cut these tendencies, a new set of restrictions on Government funding on these populist schemes and doles to vulnerable sections of the society should be laid down by capping a ceiling either in monitory terms or as a percentage of overall funds spend in a Government budget. The Election Commission & the Supreme Court shall lay down new set of principles on Election manifestoes of Political parties to curtail these undemocratic tendencies. more
