Is Lifestyle charging taxes on discounted sales
Lifestyle was charging taxes on discounted MRP. I was Also a victim of such unethical business practices and therefore complained to the retailer. After much follow up, the retailers refunded the amount so charged. Based on my bringing the issue on public domain as an awareness and the general feedback was that the retailer is charging taxes. Issue was escalated to the authorities also including Department of Consumer Affairs with rigorous follow up.
I had a chance to visit their store again in Noida on 20th August 2018 and found that the brand has stopped charging taxes on discount sales. In case any of the consumer is feeling that the taxes being charged on discounted MRp may like to upload the bill of purchase and share the experience as a comment on the post. While on above in case the consumers confirm about stopping of such practices by Lifestyle, I would like to thank the authorities for their intervention. more

@Shri Harpal Singh ji, Sir, for a proper understanding of the issue, the retailers cannot charge any tax on the discounted sale prices which become revised MRP after discounts. On the contrary, the retailers are charging the taxes. As an example a product with MRP of Rs. 1,000/- if offered with 50% discounts, the product should be sold to the consumers at net price of Rs. 500/- whereas the prices were being charged as Rs. 500/- plus GST. The complaints were taken up and I did not find this practice of charging GST on the discounted prices in my recent purchase from the retailer. Why I have requested the members to share copy of their recent bills is just to ensure that the retailer has stopped the unfair practices across the board. Sir, I hope I am now clear and let me know if any additional input required. more

You are right. MRP includes all the levies and taxes and these include GST. No addtional charge is applicable in any form and so anything charged under any pretext is illegal. more

Mr. Virmani, what you have stated is somewhat confusing. I think you were trying to make the retailer charge the tax on the discounted price and not on MRP which he may be doing. However your opening sentence states that he was charging taxes on the discounted price. You have once again asked the readers to upload the bills /invoices where the taxes have been charged on the "discounted MRP". This needs to be rechecked. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. more

My observation is that now the wholesalers have started printing wrong GST numbers. I filled GST number of 2 dealers in the website of Govt GST site but the site said: The GST number is not valid. What is the meaning? Plain answer is " the GST number allotted by GST authorities is different from the one printed on the I voice. " In this way it is difficult for the consumer to find out whether a restaurant or mall is paying tax charged to Govt. more
