Issues Businesses face with Labour Laws: Inputs Sought

India is experiencing a jobs crisis. With a minimum salary defined at INR 24,000, more and more businesses may tend to hire workforce on contract or for specific tasks i.e. driving, pick up, delivery, repairs, etc. India’s labour laws are still stuck in the past and not designed for the 21st century economy. Its critical that even if people dont find full time jobs, they earn a livelihood doing legitimate work. We seek your inputs on all the issues your business faces when hiring people on contract. Do the labour department or the labour harasses you?

If you are not familiar, talk to those involved in business in your family and friends or share this post link with them over whatsapp!

Once the issues are identified, we will have a seperate discussion on solutions followed by a submission to all the relevant stakeholders in the Government so actions can be taken on this front. more

In India productivity of a laborer is much below say for example to that of China. That is why we are not competent in International market and thus Chinese product is being sold in so many countries including India. If our increasing population has to survive in present international market then both quality and quantity of out put of Indian laborer has to increase. more
Exploitation of labor was happening when awareness was low and it is not true any more. In the present scenario of global level competition, employee welfare alone should not be the criteria if the economic situation and consequently employment opportunities have to improve. Therefore the minimum wages should be so fixed that it will improve productivity and will be beneficial to both the employee and the employer. For this the minimum wage should be low and for hourly basis only and the rest should be paid based on productivity of the employee or the group of employees when there are more than one employee involved in a given task. All payments should be made directly to the bank accounts of the employees concerned and there should not be any harassment by any government department when minimum wages and minimum conditions are satisfied by the employer. more
We must think of short-duration work based on one's skills and hour took to complete an assignment. For example, interested ladies who are at home can be assigned to perform a job with hourly basis payments or otherwise. This will also help generating interest among the other members, having time, energy and skills, to participate in the world of work and also become far better productive in due course of time including disseminating the idea and value of labour among the younger generation from the very young age. In due course of time many youngsters may become or take up entrepreneurship seriously... more
As long as there is a buyer and seller of services as long as services are not illegal, there should be no harassment. None by Govt officials. more
