IT department - Sending demand notices for tax already paid

I received a demand notice for the returns filed in 2008. There was no e-filing then. It was manual. IT department sent a demand notice in 2011 for which I responded that the amount has already been paid and they accepted it. Now again for the same returns, they are sending notice again. Either their system has gone for a toss for their data entry is not correct. Sheer harassment of honest tax payers.
And they let the big fishes who have not paid taxes fly away. more

IT department of GOI is most hopeless department for honest tax payers. Harassment level is such some time you are bound to feel why to pay tax / filing ITR. In my case due to their computing mistake they charged extra and latter applied for refund, no body is ready to listen or accept the grievances. They just put off the grievances by writing ‘Resolved’. Helpline is also not helping or guiding correctly whom to approach since last 2 years. There is no email id where you can explain the matter. more
Yes, it is a fact that such demand notices are being sent to taxpayers. This has happened in many cases. Form 26AS is an authentic documents of Income Tax department, showing TDS deducted and credited to Govt. account in case of an individual tax payer. This document is generated on Income Tax department site. But irony is that department it self is not stickup to this important document and sending demand notices to Army Officers. This fact is evident from the attached circular. more
despite of writing letters, sending mails, you can solve this problem by visiting your IT circle and talk with the assistant commissioner of the IT Circle. also carry the hard copy of return filed or intimation received by mail. more
The case of Mr Padmanabhan may be an exception. As suggested by Mr Mohit Pande he may reply to the notice to get a satisfactory reply. I believe the present portal to file income tax is faster and better. In many cases tax payers have received the refund in hours after filling their return. Normally taxpayers are getting refund, if due, with in a few days. more
Something is seriously wrong. A perfectly working income tax portal, incometaxefilingindia.gov.in set during the previous government's tenure, created under Dr. Manmohan Singh's steering the economy and refined after so many years, has been completely replaced by incometax.gov.in. Why so, when return filing had become entirely electronic, right upto e-verification, processing and if due, getting refund! Government seems more keen changing every legacy inherited, entirely politically motive. Taxpayers, such as us, see the system getting convoluted unnecessarily. New portal running has taken 29 month yet many links were in progress after 25 months! This could have been done parallely, if at all, keeping both portals, leaving the taxpayer a choice option, letting you choose the portal for the filing. Please trust us with that much sense. Data gathered therefrom, proactive would lead the authorities in deciding which to choose. This seems entirely political, with CBDT taking directives from prime minister's office. Control tyranny. more
