A CBI court on Friday held 47 policemen guilty of killing 11 Sikh pilgrims in a fake encounter in Pilibhit around 25 years ago. The court took 20 convicts into custody and sent them to jail, whereas it issued non-bailable warrants against rest 27 who did not appear before it at the time the verdict. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on April 4. Convicting the accused policemen under Sections 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping), 365 (kidnapping with illegal confinement), 218 (public servant framing incorrect records) and 117 (abetting commission of offence by more than 10 persons) read with 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, CBI judge Lalloo Singh said that there was ample evidence against these persons for kidnapping and conspiring to kill the pilgrims in the name of terrorists.
The most important question is why it should take 25 years to convict the accused. There is immediate and urgent need to conduct a study of Legal Processes being carried out in the country and find the causes for such long delays and find solutions to expedite it. more
