Justifying GST on discounted price
Seems there are some people in this circle who are ok with charging and paying gst on discounted price.
I must tell you that you are on the wrong foot on that one sirs. If a shoppers stop is saying 50% off, it better give me 50% off and not trick me to pay gst on top of the price.
We must all collectively stand up against this and the consumer dept should ensure this is not happening. more

There are two aspects here only is selling price plus tax or MRP inlcusive of tax, if discount given on MRP then tax should be only on reduced price but most of CA's say discount should not be considred for tax purpose and tax should be on gross price which is not correct but alas govt should educate public or businessmen by gazette notification/gst notification to clear this confusion as it is still not clear among business class !! more

As far as I know, the guideline is that even if a business house offers discount on its products / services, the GST will be payable at the full price and NOT on the discounted price. So, if a businessman offers 50% discount and pays GST also on that part of the price to the government, the effective discount will be 60+ % for the business house. Let's therefore ask the government to come up with a clear cut policy and rationalise the GST tax structure by looking into the flaws. As of today, even the CAs are confused, what to say of an ordinary businessman. more

A MRP contains that tax factor. So if the retailer is giving a discount on the MRP, can we not assume that the retailer has kept the tax factor intact and has calculated the discount accordingly? more

Please be informed that there are two parts of MRP. One is the Sale Price and the other VAT/GST. GST is charged in a manner that the total does not exceed the MRP. Any discount in the price means, discount on the Sale Price, not the GST which has got to be charged on the discounted price and the formula is the same as it was in the case of VAT - chargeable on value addition only. more

In my case Rs. 3500/- should include sale price +VAT/GST. So, they should have given discount on sale price and then should have added GST on the discounted price. But they added GST on the 50% of total price which already had GST.
