Langada Mango in North India
I want to advise all members and their family to be doubly sure before consuming the langada mango common in north india in this season.
Yesterday, I spoke to 3 different sellers and all 3 confirmed that they were actively using carbide i.e. masala and chinese ethylene.
When asked why, they said not only do it, but we get it with carbide ripening from back end.
I urge FSSAI to get active and take some action by sending local food inspectors to fruit mandis across north india, esp delhi, up, haryana, punjab. more

On more than one occasions, the issue of mango ripening using chemicals has been discussed at length. It is not clear why these issues are raised again and again when it is known fact that FSSAI can't control it mainly due to lack of enough manpower. Wherever, staff is available for genuine check-ups their honesty is at stake in most of the cases. Then who is to bother about the well-being of the common public ? is a continuing question to be answered by whom ? more

Although every action need to be taken to eradicate the system of ripening fruits with calcium carbide etc but we should not be alarmed too much as we can take extra precautions while using these fruits. The artificial ripening of fruits is prevalent as long as I can remember for over 60 years and I don't see if any effective action can be taken by the meagre staff available, that too unwilling to work honestly, with the enforcement agencies. It is very easy to write suggestions to curve this menace but difficult to take some corrective action even at our level. This could be easily done in one season. For one season we should boycott purchase of ripened fruits with artificial catalytic agents. If we can do it collectively in one season then I am in no doubt that from the next season only naturally ripened fruits will be available in the markets. more

This thing is happening in such large scale that unless Goverment takes strict action nothing will happen. Even food inspectors must be using the same products but they are not bothered. The people who are doing such things shall have to be educated or punished more

Its not a question of North India or Sound India. And carbide and various chemicals are not used only in langada or other mangoes. These are used in all kind of fruits & vegetables all over the country in large scale as well as by all the whole sellers and retailers. The governments and their related agencies are well aware of these happenings and its aftermath on the human health. But corruptions have overtaken them & their priorities. We have to take care of our health ourselves and to find out the ways and means to get rid of these crooks instead of depending on the government agencies. more
