leakage of data

Dear friends.

I have downloaded a travel app from google stores in my wife's mobile. I have provided the required personal data of my wife while installing the app. in the email column, i have provided my personal email id (as she is not a frequent email user).

Now i receive a promotional email from a general insurance company in my email id mentioning my wife's name as receiver. I never had any dealing with this insurance company.

This gives me a conclusion that, the travel app company is sharing the details of users to third party with out our consent. I strongly doubts this travel app company because, this email arrangement i have done with this company only.

Similar experience, i had in the past also, when i provided my mobile number while booking an air ticket for my senior citizen father. I have made the payment through my debit card and provided my mobile number while online booking through the airline's website. Next day i got the call from somebody and he asked my father's name for confirmation and he asked me all my debit card details for verification.

In both above cases, i was not a victim as i was cautious and i know these kind of frauds. But i am sharing the experience with all of you to be cautious. more

While sharing our own data with any one, we do not read the privacy policy and start clicking yes and yes as there is no other option. If you press no, you will not be able to proceed. In all probability, the privacy policy must be containing the sharing of data with 3rd parties. So one need to decide whether to go ahead with the download of app or not. more
All free mobile apps asks permission to connect your phone data like phone book, SD card, photos etc. and they use all these details for sharing with other. These free apps are cheats. These are not free in actual terms, the price is all personal data of app user. Beware of these cheats. Avoid installing such apps or in case you need to install any of these apps please do not allow access to your personal data. Keep an extra email for such use. more
I had a similar experience when I merely applied for a credit card through State Bank of India Mylapore Branch, Chennai. Immediately after furnishing the application and even before issue of the credit card my mobile phone was inundated with all kinds of promotional material, including builders. It is a nuisance. Also a vague request for authorising something after going to some website. When I enquired about this with SBI Mylapore, they said it could be because they want to view my CIBIL report. When the credit card was being issued on the basis of my deposit with SBI Branch why should I authorise an unknown party to view my CIBIL report? Unknown because when I tried to call the numher it said "Invalid number". So I told the lady assistant I do not want the card and deleted the message. I also took objection to the courier lad asking me to furnish identification papers before he would hand over the credit card. Since I had furnished all KYC norms to the Bank and the Credit Card section I felt it was outrageous that the Blue Dart Courier Service delivery boy should demand identity verification when other couriers and IndiaPost do not, while delivering more important mail to me. Only a mere acknowledgment. So I refused the card and asked him to send it back to SBI and also informed SBI Mylapore directly and SBI Card Division through email. I am still receiving the occasional promotional mail directed at SBI cardholders on my mobile 'phone which I delete immediately. Where is the traditional secrecy code of bankers? Rampant abuse of the privacy is prevalent all over the digital space. Our nation's cyber laws and their enforcement are abysmally weak to fix this problem. more
