LEGACY OF INDIAN RAILWAYS :

India's railway journey commenced 172 years ago in 1853, with the primary objective of facilitating the movement of the British army, their supplies, and essential goods for the East India Company to enhance its trade. Concurrently, the indigenous population, then categorized as 'subjects', were also granted access to the railways, initially for labor transportation and subsequently for general travel.

Post-independence in 1947, a reformed and dynamic India reshaped this narrative. The railway system transitioned from solely transporting laborers to enabling the travel of Indian citizens—a transformation that symbolizes the shift from colonial subjugation to national empowerment.
Presently, India boasts an extensive railway network spanning 92,952 kilometers, intricately weaving across the nation and uniting people throughout its expanse. Successive leaders, prioritizing the welfare of the underprivileged, promoted affordable travel, nurturing a sense of belonging among distant families and communities. The hierarchical structure of railway classes—1st class, 2nd class, intermediate, and 3rd class—was meticulously designed to ensure inclusivity across all economic strata within a single train.

A Monumental Public Service
Thirty million Indian citizens utilize the railways daily for both commuting and long-distance travel. With over 7,000 railway stations, it stands as one of the largest transport networks globally. The Indian Railways employs 1.6 million individuals, establishing itself as one of the world's largest employers with a highly unionized workforce.

THE IMPERATIVE OF STRONG LEADERSHIP
Given the immense scale and significance of Indian Railways, its administration necessitates specialized leadership:
- A dedicated Cabinet Minister for Railways, devoid of additional portfolios, is imperative to ensure further advancement and development.
- Four Ministers of State should be designated from varied regions—East, West, North, and South—to address region-specific challenges and ensure equitable governance.
- These leaders must possess profound knowledge and expertise in railway operations, management, and public service.
Acknowledging Railway Technocrats.
The Indian Railways has been molded by exceptional technocrats who devoted their lives to its advancement. A notable example is Mr. Sudhanshu Mani, former GM of ICF, who spearheaded the development of Train 18—the precursor to the modern Vande Bharat Express. His vision underscored not only high-speed luxury travel but also affordable non-AC options for passengers requiring urgent travel for professional or familial obligations.
Prioritizing Safety & Service
As recent media reports emphasize, the paramount focus for Indian Railways should be:
- Safety – Ensuring the well-being of every passenger.
- Cleanliness – Upholding hygiene standards across trains and stations.
- Punctuality – Enhancing efficiency in train schedules.
- Passenger Comfort – Especially for those opting for superior facilities.

A CALL FOR REFORM
Shouldn't Indian Railways have a dedicated ministry, with a full-time Railways Minister and four competent Ministers of State from diverse regions to oversee this expansive and vital national institution? Indian Railways transcends being merely a transport system—it serves as the lifeblood of the nation. Thoughtful leadership, innovative advancements, and unwavering dedication to safety and service can guarantee its enduring legacy. - Jai Hind

Dear Jayakumar, Thank you for sharing this interesting historical perspective on the evolution of Indian Railways. It's fascinating to consider the initial purpose and how it has transformed over time to serve the needs of a modern India. The shift from colonial objectives to national empowerment is indeed a significant one. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. The Person should be from Ground level , travelled & travelling in Railway in all class , Practical & know how to handle the thick skin officers who are sitting in AC cabin & making the rules , strategy. May not be highly educated but strong leader. Sophisticated Peoples only shout on Social media but not doing Practically any thing.
Your suggestions are good but may be difficult to implement. There is no minimum qualification for contesting Lok Sabha election. Even convicted criminals currently in jail can contest Lok Sabha election and win. There is urgent need to amend People's Representation Act to ensure that only qualified people with adequate experience are allowed to contest Lok Sabha election. Another option is to select people with profound knowledge and experience from Private Sector and make them ministers.
Yap A good example we had was a . It took 28 years to convict and was elected. Only the normal death could prevent her from getting elected again.
There is scope for improvement
Good suggestion. The Union Government should implement.
