Level Crossing Accidents
one more accident today at an unmanned level crossing in UP which killed 5 school going children. As reported over 50000 have been killed while crossing railway track in last five years. Just too much. As usual railways have declared exgratia payment.
Out of over 35000 rail crossings about 18000 are unmanned. Rail minister should vow to make all of them manned. The concerned state Govt should bear 50% of the cost. Also local residents near a railway crossing should form a group of volunteers to supervise the safety at the crossing point. After all, it is wrong to put all the blame on railways. more

Instead of installing radar and auto alarm ,the loco pilot can be asked to sound the horn at least 2 kms before the unmanned level crossing. safer alternative will be to close the gate from the nearest station with the help of CCTV and a pair of control wires from station to gate. more

Railway budget has proposed abolition of all unmanned level crossings which is not practical.Salary for the gate men (3 for each gate) will be the costliest item in establishing a manned level crossing. Gates can be easily monitored by CCTV and operated from the nearest Railway station without any gate men.In fact the existing manned gates also could be converted to CCTV controlled gates and operated without gate men. Railways will save lot of money and also avoid the frequent accidents at the unmanned gates . more

Further to my comments/suggestions on preventing railway cossing accidents at unmanned crossing points. It is not impossible to provide a technological solution. A small radar can detect an aproaching train and sound an alarm to warn people crossing the track. Railways have a research and development centre which should takeup the task urgently. more
