Lift Maintenance Standards

Despite raising the issue since 2018 the BIS has still not come up with standards for maintenance of lift. If a new society like supernova in Noida (had lift go into free fall from 34th to 17th floor, imagine your parents or children in it) every year thousands of incidents happen if not lakhs.

Can we please get LC manager to escalate this matter. Most lift inspectors work for bribes in the country. Here the lifts should be maintained by companies and they must certify and if incident happens the company or brand servicing must be held liable.

Can this be taken up on priority? more

Lift maintenance is a must all the times. When it is unserviceable, then it puts specially Senior Citizens in difficult situation. Senior citizens can not carry any activity and are stranded. Secondly if the lift is not working then Stairs must be kept clean and free from all type of Rubbish. Adequate lights must be provided in the terrace and stairs area. more
Installation and Maintenance of Lifts are governed by (1) The Bombay Lift Act,1939 - The Bombay Lift Rules 1958, (2) The Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Moving Walks Act, 2017 and (3) Bis Specification IS 15 15259 - Installation and Maintenance of Home Lifts. However, the matter regarding 'free fall' seems to be unusual for present days' lifts. Lifts getting stranded on a particular floor, or not stopping on a called floor / journey floor may happen due to malfunction of the logic controllers, but .. more
I agree with the cause and effect part of your post but surprised to note that Maintenance of Lifts is either a subject of Municipalities or State Government. There should be uniform laws through out India and the manufacturer shall be made liable for it under a maintenance contract. Unlike in other utilities and appliances, non-warranty paid as and when needed visits should be banned. more
Specifications issued BIS are normally are recommendatory in nature, unless Government stipulates these as mandatory. In some cases Society need to evolve and/or stringent punishment or fines need to be imposed on the defaulting party. more
Many housing societies give out AMC contracts to agencies other than the original supplier, and this is being penny wise and pound foolish. more
Many of the 'original suppliers' do not are for the contractual obligations. They do not attend to repairs on Sundays/ Holidays. If the repairs has not been done on the day the complaint was raised, that get automatically cancelled, and you have to register a new complaint. Thus, was the norms of M/s Kone Elevators(I) Ltd. at Nagpur - during 2008-10. Therefore, people falls on other maintenance contractors. Some of them are equipped only with a plier and screw driver, and have never done a soldering of electronic components. Most of the Office bearers ( President/ Secretary, ...) have not heard about Lift Rules - not to speak about the provisions contained therein. They are not amenable to learn the same also. In our society, water absorbing and dirt accumulating floor-mats have been placed in the lifts.I have surrendered to the Almighty. more
Yes. Standard procedure for maintenance is essential to save lives. more
