Lifts maintenance continues to be major issue

Lucky escape for two children on 27th. Elevator comes crashing down from 10 floor of a residential apartment in Pune after its wire breaks. See attached.

Till the central govt makes lift maintenance standards and all state lift acts incorporate and comply, effective lift maintenance is unlikely.

Also most inspectors of lifts take bribes more

In this particular case I donot have the facts as to the life of the LIFT, warranty, mfgr, etc. From the video it appears to be a case of faulty lift without any safety stds. If Ms.Shika can send details to me I can possibly comment. 9923335657. I have people who had promoted, sold, serviced Elevators like ELITE, Johnson, German makes, etc in India. There will be laws pertaining to mfgrs liability and useres duty. We can check when required. The most unfortunate thing is no body is bothered unless and untill an accident takes place. Wise people choose a reputed lift so such problems donot occur. more
The responsibility for such regular maintenance lies with the people residing in the building. more
While there must be suitable laws in this regard with provisions for stringent punishment for those responsible fail to observe the provisions of law, the Societies of the residential complexes, who are responsible for maintenance of such complexes are equally responsible to ensure proper maintenance of the lifts as well. more
Basically we need stringent laws and fast deliverance of justice. more
Manuel Aaron: Those who actually live in the apartments and use the Lifts should make sure that the Lifts are properly maintained and inspected periodically. It would be helpful if the name of the Inspector from the Government who certifies the Lift is prominently mentioned in some manner in the lift cabin itself. That could ensure accountability. more
Mr Manuel is very right. However in builders society or societies not maintained by the residents or RWA, the problem is serious. Builder would neither maintain it nor would take any responsibility if accident takes place. more
