One other post in Transforming India mentions that the ticket cost from Delhi to Varanasi costed ₹ 37,000/. What can say for this. more
It appears that the government is least concern in protecting the interests of the common man. The air fare ranging from Rs.3500/- to Rs.4000/- per passenger one way i normal course has gone to Rs.19000/- to Rs.20000- per passenger one way during the Kumbh Mela has crossed all the limits of looting of the Airways. The concerned ministry in the government is expected to step in immediately and ensure that the fares are brought down to a reasonable extent during the world's largest religious congregation. more
It is the responsibility of the government to safeguard its citizens, even from exploitation by greedy business establishments. The government has ample authority to address such issues and bring them under control. The Price Monitoring Division (PMD) of the Department of Consumer Affairs monitors the prices of essential commodities. The government regulates the pricing of certain products through laws and orders, such as the Essential Commodities Act, the Drug Price Control Order, and Legal Metrology regulations. It also monitors prices through its centers across India. Platforms like Local Circles provide avenues for citizens to report and bring such matters to the government’s attention. However, the Government of India does not directly regulate airfares. Airlines are allowed to set their own prices based on operational costs, market demand, and other factors. The government generally avoids intervening in airfare regulation to promote market competitiveness. Essentially, it is left to the public to decide whether air travel is justified at the prevailing costs. In India, a deeply spiritual nation, many devoted to religious pursuits may accept such costs, particularly in the absence of any government-imposed regulations on airfares. more
Ms. GS, it is good you have brought out the fact of exorbitant charging by airlines. It reminds people of the Shakespearian Character in the play "Merchant of Venice", 'Shylock'. He is portrayed as greedy and exploitative and selfish. Probably this is a stray incident of just one ticket was charges or slipped the notice of Aviation Ministry. more
When every body wants to travel within short period this type situation is bound to crop up. Civil aviation ministry should inease flights if possible. more
