Luggage Charges and penalties

From now, you will be charged for carrying extra baggage on the trains, exactly like air travel. And in case, you are seen carrying excess luggage without booking the same, you will have to shell out 6-times more than the normal rates.

How much luggage can you take with you for free?
If you are travelling in AC first class, you can carry up to 70kgs for free, and for AC 2-Tier, the limit is 50Kgs. In AC 3-tier sleeper, AC chair car and the sleeper class, carrying baggage up to 40 kilos is allowed. For 2-class, the limit is up to 25kgs.
The minimum charge for luggage is Rs.30.

What is the penalty for carrying unbooked luggages?
From now, passengers will be penalised for carrying unbooked luggage on the train.
As per the notification, When a passenger is detected either en route or at the destination with unbooked or partially booked luggage weighing more than the free allowance, the excess unbooked weight exceeding the free allowance of luggage is charged at six times the luggage scale rate instead of 6 times of scale -R as earlier.
“However, if unbooked or partially booked luggage is detected more than the free allowance of then luggage but within the marginal allowance, it is charged at 1.5 times the luggage scale rate." more

In a transport system where I had to travel with number of unauthorised passengers in our coach with deaf and dumb TTE , this type of silly and nasty rules will only give power to those corrupt officials and RPF to snatch money out of common people's pocket. more
Apart from the weight limit, there is a limit on size of the packages also: 1) Trunks/ suitcases/ boxes should be of max. 100cms x 60cms x 25cms, and further 2) For travelling in 3AC and AC Chair cars, the limit is : 55cms x 45cms x 22.5cms more
This is a common practice around the world. Please stop pushing this kind of governmental meddling. This is what got Air India into debt. Pushing government control in private industry does nothing but shifts cost. Worry about more important things to make India great. more
Incase railways expect to have hazel and corruption free charging of passanger luggage, Railways to privatize weighing scales of all railway stations . All electronic scales to be calibrated frequently to maintain accuracy. Against every luggage is scaled, screen shots with fully comptariaed calculated charges must be made available at boarding and destination stations. Enrute passangers should not be harassed by squads for what so ever may be the reason. more
