Lychee - Careful Friends
Last year lychee (litchi) fruit harvested and consumed in May and June was poisoning malnourished children who ate it on an empty stomach. Over 100 died.
It turns out that naturally-occurring toxins in the fruit, hypoglycin A and methylenecyclopropylglycine (MCPG), were almost certainly interfering with glucose production in the children’s bodies, leading to fevers, brain swelling, seizures, and even death in almost half of the cases.
