when you overload a Taxi, you are penalised, when you overload Lorry you are penalised, but in railways it appears there is no overloading. In a 2nd class compartment > 200 people squeeze through. They travel without water in toilets, risking their lives etc. More than the sanctioned capacities tickets should not be allowed to be printed and issued. Then only the crowd will be manageable and hygiene and services can be provided more
One more area where I feel railways can save is in the energy consumption. all Electric Locomotives irrespective whether it runs at 40 kms or 100 kms consumes same power. Many trains are dead slow in running consuming more energy. These speed can be increased so that running time will be reduced thereby there will be huge savings in energy consumption. Experts Electrical engineers views sought on this. For Example a train consumes 5000 units for running a distance of say 100 kms in 3 hours average 30 kms speed. If it runs in 50 kms speed it can cover the distance in 2 hours thereby saving 1 hour energy. more
Though it is clearly not practical and possible to monitor the Travelling public in an over poulated poor country like India the way it is suggetsed - see the enormous logistics involved, unless an Army is put into operation merely for this (which again is not neither practical nor desirable, after all the Trains are meant for the common people of this country) all one can do is to have some more General compartments. more
