Maternity Bill

Parliament has passed a bill where women will get 26 weeks of paid maternity leaves. While I totally understand how important it is for women, does it not impact startups who can't afford even salaries to pay someone's half year compensation. Would we see more male only startups as a result. Would love to hear from all, esp female founders, business owners? more

Maternity Benefits Act is not only aimed at the welfare of the mother to be but also the welfare of the baby. The Paediatrics Society had recommended the increase of Maternity Leave from three months to six months not now but in the 'eighties. If you recall that in the USA women slaves had to work in plantations without any maternity leave and breastfeed the newborn baby left at the end of a line of cotton plants you would understand how women workers have been exploited for ages during a most vulnerable time of their lives. Moreover the leave is available only for two children and will in no way increase the population alarmingly. You may study the economy and notice that it is in the informal sector with no benefits and low income that theparents are prolific in child bearing. Also the sector with high Infant Mortality. Societies advance and develop only if the women also are enabled to participate in the economy and not exploited. L.Kalavathi Retd. Bank Official Chennai/Tamilnadu/India 13/03/2017 more
The amendment bill is a welcome relaxation to women .to be more on the positive side , i guess it can only boost the growth scale in totality. more
The move may/may not help the nation in broader prospect. While there is hue and cry for higher cost of living/expenses/taxation etc where shall the government gets funds for compensation to establishments which has subsidized every thing. How the monies will come/generated? Six months down the line with new booming population where do we have space!!!! more
