Maximizing Railway Revenues - Addl Inputs

Many of the inputs received from the Make Railways Better circle are being implemented. With this post we would like to share some of the opportunities identified by you for Railways to generate additional revenue. Kindly review them and share any additional specific inputs that must be implemented to boost Railway revenues.

We look forward to your inputs!

Revenue Opportunities for Railways

1. Railways land could be used to construct offices/warehouses and leased to private
companies
2. Time spent by citizens in trains can be effectively monetized through spas/ayurveda
massages/treatments/ e-library/movies etc.
3. The inside and outside of the trains could be used for advertisements like the Delhi Metro
4. Install LCD display in chair cars and use it to display time/station and advertisements
5. Platform tickets and journey tickets can have advertisement at the back
6. Railways could build a hotel on the floors above the platform to generate revenue
7. Multi-story office space could be constructed in place of existing station premises and
rented out
8. Chargeable wi-fi services in trains and on platforms
9. Railway stations could be put to limited commercial use
10. Rates of the platform ticket could be raised
11. All the passes should be converted to tickets and the money should be realized from the
ministries
12. The fines collected from passengers should be collected against receipts so that the right
amount could be reported
13. 1-2 goods bogies should be attached to the passenger trains too to carry courier/urgent shipments
14. The steel, iron and other waste material lying by the tracks across the country should be put
to use or sold off. more

Railways could consider constructing Multi-level Pay Parking complexes at all major stations like it is done at most airports since parking spaces are grossly inadequate in all major towns/cities.Driveway lanes can be constructed like airports for pick and drop in addition for streamlining the vehicular movement within the Railway Station premises. In addition Railways can consider providing feeder bus service with adequate baggage space on payment from all major stations to city center/prominent hubs which will attract passengers since otherwise taxis charge exorbitant rates. more
Railway is looking at external resources, however, my observation is that they are losing on TATKAL QUOTA many a times. Today I have noticed that in Train number 17209 from Bangalore to Kakinada, 3rd AC, 131 berths and in 2nd AC 28 berths are available in "current availability" for today's journey from Pakala. Till yesterday, both classes are in Wait List in General Quota. People do not book tickets if wait list number is high and rather plan alternative means. In my view, Railways is losing money because of Tatkal. Infact, vacant berths have become a source of income while allotting berths during journey for others whereby railway is not gaining and traveler is losing. Railways should think of releasing the entire quota with an incremental progressive charge (Dynamic Pricing) not exceeding the Tatkal charges so that people can book tickets freely whenever they want without any panic and Railways can get the income well in advance without waiting for the day of Tatkal more
Effort is praise worthy. excellent suugeestions have come up. I wish to modify warehouse suggestion. Major problem is inadequate storage facilities for food and resultant huge wastage. Railway is spread throughout India and is also prime and economic transport. If ware house properly designed for food grown in the area including chain of cold storages are set up it will reduce wastage. Storage should be rodent proof and well fumigated. Railway can build these in pop mode. A typical warehouse can be constructed at relatively low cost and if need arise it can easily be demolished and material can be reused. more

I have observed that all along the railway track throughout the country railway lands are lying vacant ( though some places are encroached ) mostly in the form of Jheel and ponds . This huge amount of railway land either should be utilized for cultivation, commercial shops (near railway stations ) or fish production ground . more
