Media versus Operational Focus of Railways

I find that the Railways in last 3 years has increased its focus much more on media management than in past. The same news is talked about 20 times while in reality its still not delivered.

100s of examples from RO water at stations to cleanliness, catering. they keep making same announcement over and over and media I dont why keeps publishing it.

Not much has changed on the ground other than online ticketing being better but then they are charging a lot more.

Mr. Prabhu would do the nation a great service by driving more operationally than via media.

Hope as in a democracy we can have a healthy discussion on this. more

Why can not private agents issue Ticket/ Reservation at stations when they can do it in shop. more
Totally Disagree. There are a lot of improvements. RO water is availble in Chennai Central and Egmore stations at cheaper rates. A RO counter has been opened in Velachery MRTS Station also. There are visible improvement in cleanliness also. I have never seen before that the platforms and the railway station is being washed and cleaned. Now, I frequently see such total washing and cleaning of stations. It is a very big establishment left as it is for long and requires time and focus for more longer period for corrective actions and implementation. more
I think railway employees neither understand the requirement of the passengers nor moto of the railways yo give better services, they are going on announcing the policies but not reaching the ground level nor not allowed to reach ground -- strong unions sc/st associations are against BJP may be the reason more
Our Railway system like Catering, RO Water and Cleanness and reservation is very bad. For more earning, vendor are not giving food quality. Apart some railway station no Ro water supply available. Seats for waiting list passengers are not available even seats are available in train. But TT refuse for seat. more
There have been improvement in several areas during last three years though not upto the expectation of the passengers. It would be an injustice done to the railways by denying that the stations, platforms, the tracks running through the stations and the trains are much cleaner than the earlier era. Availability of confirmed tickets has also eased to some extent in comparison to the earlier times. Most of the big and medium sized stations have been provided with lifts & escalators for the convenience of the passengers, particularly for the women and the aged ones. Even medium sized stations have also now private restaurants where you can have foods of your choice. However, the railways have utterly failed in bringing in required improvement in the quality of foods being prepared in pentry cars and supplied to the passengers. The quality of foods being arranged from outside hotels and supplied to the passengers in premium trains has seriously deteriorated over the decade but there is no remarkable improvement in the area during the period under review. The present ministry has considerably hiked the rail fares and other charges, such as, charges for cancellation of confirmed tickets in the name of upgrading the Indian rails into world class but no efforts in this direction are noticeable till now. Probably the size of our fleet and limited resources are obstructing the ministry in going for a large scale renovation of the nation's pride. more
From the various comments it is felt that a major shake-up in IRTC is required. The transparency and accountability at various levels need to be defined, closely monitored and should be strictly enforced. more
In my opinion, introduction of dynamic fare system in Indian rails without making it world class is an immatured and short sighted blunder of the railway ministry and today or tomorrow they will have to revert it back. As far as quality of foods is concerned, my observations were in line with your ones. more
There is a huge gap between the hype and the actual improvement. Due to the dynamic fare system on Rajdhani and similar trains at least 40% of the seats are going empty, as the difference between train and air fare is only a little. The impact of the new policy on the railways' revenue is not being divulged. Despite increasing passenger fare, the quality of the food supplied even in the AC 1st Class of the Rajdhani express trains is worse than before. On what assumptions/basis the menus are drawn up is known only to the railways. Overall, in my opinion (and I am a regular Rajdhani passenger) the so-called improvements are merely superficial and have not made our journeys any more comfortable than they had been before the new Railway Minister took office. more
