Medical Facilities in Trains

Few months back inputs were shared with us via this circle on medical facilities in Railways. We are pleased to share the following information. Kindly review and if you have additional inputs on how the facilities can be improved given the constraints, please let us know.

We look forward to your inputs!

A pilot project of deployment of doctors in Duronto Trains was undertaken for a period of two years. During the Pilot Project, it was noted that serious patient could not be treated on board and had to be de-trained for medical treatment at a hospital only because the medical equipments, such as ECG machines etc. do not function properly on the trains due to noise/ vibration etc.

Further, First Aid Boxes containing essential drugs and dressing materials are provided with the guards of all passenger carrying trains. In addition, Augmented First Aid Boxes with wide range of medicines, disposable medical material, etc. have been provided with the Train Superintendents/ Guards of Rajdhani/Shatabdi Express trains and some nominated trains. Front line staffs deployed on trains are also trained in rendering First Aid.

The Station Masters of all stations have details of doctors, clinics and hospitals, both Government and Private, in the vicinity of the station, so that their services could also be availed, in emergencies. Ambulance services of both Railway hospitals and State Governments are utilized when required. more

The TTE available in the coach should carry First aid materials. more
During my journey in Rahdhani Train from H Nizamudin to Trivandrum in the month of Oct. 2016, a lady passenger who was accompanied by her husband was running high temperature. He contacted the train superintendent, who advised him that doctor can be arranged only In the next station and they don't have any medicine.I gave him paracetamol and told him to have some biscuits/tea before taking it. The traiin attendent was helpful . However I could not see the couple the next day morning. What I suggest is that the train superintendent should have the details of doctors if any travelling in the train. The T.S must be provided with all emergency medicines; and the stocks of such medicines should be closely monitored. Except in serious cases, the patient must be allowed to continue the journey since breaking the journey leads to hardships to the passengers especially for unaccompanied ladies and elderly. Railways should do something on priority. more

For rendering emergency medical facilities inside the running trains, atleast a scheme/provision for extra facility like reserved seats and allowance may be offered exclusively to the registered and qualified medical practitioners, who travels in the same train. Such Doctors should be asked to write the MCI registration Number and Qualification during booking of tickets, they will atted the patient when called by TTE or Guard in a specified medical/first aid room to be prepared in A.C.Coach,so that with minimum expenditure railwaus will be able to provide emergency medical services to the travellers in a running train. more
