Few years back, they had introduced middle berth in the side in few trains, which was a bad idea. The so called planners did not bother about where will the passenger sit during the day time. With the increased load nobody bothered about the crowd in rest rooms & the additional water that was required. I remember this was rolled back couple of years back. Was that a complete roll back of only partial one? more
The passengers in the side middle berth can sit along with the lower berth passengers but as you said it is very difficult to sleep on side berths and in morning it becomes much more difficult to sit and rest. The reason why railways did this was to milk the cash register by making over use of existing rail line.that means without spending more money on doubling the rails and there by introducing more trains we did try to overload the system and that idea failed in long run. This happened in freight services also. the second reason was that side middle berth was introduced to make sure that the concept of garib rath indeed bring profit to railways by taking additional passengers in the already made bogies. This idea also failed because people did not like it. railways can go for fully ac loaded coaches as it ensures that volvo buses are targeted that operates between two states like chennai and bangalore. having said that railways has come out with premium rath trains and double decker ac sitting trains and they have introduced dynamic pricing system. let us hope that e sreedharan and suresh prabhu, modi will change railways more
