Minimise Food Waste

Today is world food day. FSSAI or other food bodies should have atleast come up with 5-6 practical things every indian must do to reduce food waste. On one hand we have excess food, on the other we have hunger. look at the recent raning of india in the global hunger index.

Seems bodies like FSSAI are just about once in a while policy but then rest of the year conference and chill than doing ground level work.

everyone is throwing food in large cities, how can we contain it by simple steps, by buying what we need then what we desire. more

In most of the cases food waste causes because of our narrow mindsets. Any one can witness in a function/reception with buffet system that majority of the guests are unconcerned about wastage of foods they are taking out in their plates much in excess & disproportionate to their requirements and capacity of consumption with ultimate result of throwing the excess foods into the waste bins making unfit for humane consumption. Their only concern is to grab best parts of the menu from the containers as much as possible and finally to store them in the waste bins. This is the trend of every Indian functions, whereas by exercising little concern substantial food enough to feed another hundred or more hungry could be saved. But it seems to be too much to expect from we indians. As Mr. Chandok rightly pointed out, both our central & state governments are fully responsible for waste of a large percentage of our food produces, not less than 20 to 25% if not 40%, as pointed out at the primary stage for want of storage facility. Its a shame that our governments couldn't arrange for adequate storage facilities even after 70 years of independence. In fact the people run the governments are least bothered to develop infrastructures necessitated to stop food wastage and ensure food for all as hunger is the main weapon for all the politicians to nurture their vote banks. more
Food Wastage that starts at home , Restaurants , Functions . Food is never wasted only in one type of Functions . That is In Temples and religious places . Where what ever is prepared is completely consumed. This practice can be started in our homes . Serve just the quantity you can consume . The elders almost measure the quantity as they have medical necessities . The others can also follow suit . The left over is in the vessel can go back to the Fridge or the domestic help or some one. Some individuals and groups have taken initiatives to collect left food from mass consumers and distribute . If it is late preserve and distribute . WHY CAN'T THE GOVERNMENT ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THIS MOVE RATHER THAN GIVING FREEBIES ? more
To reduce food wastage we have to change our mindset not to take more in the plate. more
The first and largest cause of food wastage is at the primary agricultural level. Due to non availability of cold storage, food processing etc, more than 40% of India's agricultural production is wasted/rots away. It also denies the farmer of a reasonable price at the time of harvest. This is where FSSAI & MOFPI can help. Wastage of prepared food is a matter of educating the individual. Children must be taught to take only what they can eat. So that when they become adults, the good habits will continue. No doubt FSSAI in its marketing campaigns can help educate the citizens to avoid food wastage. more
I agree! Changes should be initiated personally before others are showered with suggestions. All marriage halls and restaurants should compulsorily display local phone numbers of NGOs who collect balance food for redistribution. This can be the beginning step. more
