Minimizing Food Wastage in Trains - Addl Inputs

Below are your key inputs on what can be done to minimize food wastage in trains. Kindly review and if you have any other specific solutions, kindly share them as well. We will soon be compiling the recommendations checklist and share it with our leadership.

Minimizing Food Wastage in Trains

1. Food should be made optional in trains like Rajdhanis and Shatabdis and the fare should be adjusted lower in case someone does not want train food
2. The quality and taste of the food should be improved so that people do not waste food
3. Passengers should not accept the food in case they are not hungry
4. Passengers could also take the packed items like biscuits, curd, toffees etc. with them instead of throwing them away
5. People could be given 2 or 3 choices in food so that they don’t waste what they get
6. IRCTC should plan the food according to the weather – e.g. curd-rice in summers and biryani in winters
7. Food given should be supplied in hot and fresh
8. Packing should be in such a way that remaining food can be consumed later by the passenger
9. The food box should have quotes written on it which discourages people from throwing food
10. For main meals the passenger should be asked for the number of chapattis required
11. Salt, pepper etc. should be given only when asked for by the passenger
12. People could be allowed to reserve their food from a selected choice of menu at least one day in advance
13. An on-board sales counter for food could be started, especially on long distance journeys
14. Food wastage should attract penalty. more
