MSG in foods

I would like to understand from experts and fssai the role of msg, is it safe and to what levels.

Some of instant foods like soups, noodles have high levels of MSG. Also what is the case with restaurants? Are they allowed to add MSG for enhancing taste.

Please shed light on this! more

1. it is safe to eat 2. none of the so called side effects have till date been proven by FDA after eating foods containing MSG. 3. FDA had asked the independent scientific group Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) to examine the safety of MSG in the 1990s. FASEB’s report concluded that MSG is safe. Before the FDA or any other body raises issues including individual the best approach is they should have "data" with them and an authentic source from which the data has been taken - such as FDA, WHO etc more

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified MSG as a food ingredient that's "generally recognized as safe," but its use remains controversial. MSG, which is used as a flavor enhancer, has for decades been popularly linked to various health problems, such as headaches and allergic reactions. Better to avoid as far as possible . more
