Mumbai Locals – New Grievance AND Passenger Density

What happened today on Fri 2nd Jan 2015 on the Mumbai local tracks of the Central Railway on the railway station Thakurly, has raised many questions.

There are many locals running one after the another. Starting from the CST station, there are locals for almost every three minute in peak hours. In addition are the long distance trains, all of which are running on electric supply one behind the other.

Today one pantograph of one unit of a local train broke down. This made the entire track from Kalyan to station onwards towards the north a completely non-operational one and not only the local trains, but also the long distance trains running on that track halted wherever they were.

Surprisingly, there was no emergency action even thought of, for arranging a diesel locomotive to move the faulty local from it’s stranded place to some track on the siding, so that the rest of the trains could run smoothly on that track.

And as there is no interest in even in the planning, there is no interest in taking steps to resolve the issue, when actually there is a need for a disaster management group under each section of the railway, ready with solutions, both theoretical and practical and answerable to someone.

There have been ample incidences this year and also during the previous year, and no one appears to be faulty because no strict actions are ever thought of. One gets an impression that none of the railway employees is answerable for his work to anyone.

This is the first action needed from the ministry for the reason given below :

Passenger density is at it’s peak in the Mumbai locals and cannot be compared with the passenger density anywhere else in the country. By Passenger density, I take the number of passengers per train, multiply it by the number of trains and divide by the kilometers that the trains travel.

So if we take an example of a long distance train and if there are, say, twelve trains run between Mumbai & Pune, then the passenger density is

(number of passengers in that trains) (number of trains, which is 12 here)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Distance in Kilometers between Mumbai & Pune)

Likewise, if we do the same for Kalyan to Mumbai CST track, the Passenger density here could even be 30 to 50 times the one found in Mumbai-Pune trains for a duration of 24 hours.

And yet, the Mumbai locals have remained neglected in almost all the Railway budgets, except for increasing the fare to increase the revenue.

This needs to get corrected somewhere. Why there is no action force identified for the unforeseen incidences like the one happened today, is also a question that needs to be answered by the ministry. more
