My experience with the Railways

I am Uma Ghurka, Managing Director , Thermocables Ltd ;Tech Director, Thermopads Pvt Ltd ; Director, Thermosystems Pvt Ltd ; Co-founder of the Thermogroup, an Electrical Engg from IIT Madras of the 1975 batch,National President, Confederation of Women Entrepreneurs.

It all began with my company - Thermo Cables application for Vendor Approval with RDSO, Lucknow being rejected, on the most unreasonable grounds, and yet totally inline with the guideline laid out in the Standard Technical Requirements. However, on a deeper study of the guidelines we recognised this apparent contradiction was due to an ambiguity in the document. This fact was represented at the highest levels, both at RDSO, Lucknow and the Railway Board, Delhi. It is most heartening to see the genuine interest in the authorities to ensure fair play with Vendors. The effort and speed at which they worked, the depth to which they studied and scrutinized the case is amazing. This led to the RDSO amending the ISO guidelines bringing in clarity and thereby ensuring they open doors to more genuine and capable vendors, which is a win-win for both Railways and Suppliers.

I sincerely thank the Chairman of Railways, the Director (Efficiency & Research), the Director General, RDSO for being sensitive to their vendors and supporting them.

As we worked with the Railways, we learnt from the Chairman, Mr. Ashwani Lohani’s staff that he works 12 X 7 (9AM – 9PM – 7Days X 52 Weeks – not a holiday). When asked how do they cope up with his work, they say they work in shifts.

Hats off to such officers who work hard and listen and bring a new way of working at Railways, surely a sign of achhe din! more

Railway working on better way but there is a major problem of punctuality of trains. Maximum trains are running late. Many trains are running late 8 to 10 hrs everyday. I hope railway will work on it. If trains are late after 3 hrs. The Govt. will give some concessions to the passengers. more
Absolutely correct every individual railways employee should consider themselves as an employee who is bound for 8 hrs duty only instead he/she should serve hi/her duty with full integrity/sincerity/punctuality and responsibility. Because one mistake doesn't matter minor/major can have catastrophic effect with respect to life and government assets. more
This action of railway is simply disgusting. It seems present officers who are responsible for scrutiny for subsequent approval suffered with inferiority complex during scrutinizing your proposal. more
