Myopia or nearsightedness
Besides spectacles and contact lenses (preferably GP lenses in youngsters to slow down the progression of myopia) for correction of simple myopia, the patient is advised fresh air, outdoor activities, balanced diet, holding of reading material at about one foot distance, and glare-free lighting. Laser refractive surgery in moderate degree of myopia (once it has stabilized) may be considered on the advice of your ophthalmologist.
“All high myopes should have their fundi examined, yearly, with ophthalmoscope, as retinal detachment is a common cause of loss of vision in these cases. Immediate ophthalmic consultation is also advised if one notices floaters, flashes, or cloudiness in front of the eyes, and if there is sudden reduction in vision”, says ophthalmologist Dr. Maneesh Kumar of OphthaCare Eye Centre. more
