Never eat roadside fruit chaat

The ‘fruit chaat’ which is offered on roadsides by vendors to people is not that beneficial for health as the general perception is. Mostly, it includes fruits like papaya, watermelon, chiku, grapes and banana which are ripened with the help of calcium carbide.

Very recent findings related to carbide poisoning have reported headache, dizziness, mood disturbances, sleepiness, mental confusion and memory loss. Though eating the fruit will not bring about such an allergic reaction, the method of ripening it can cause such problems. Higher exposure may cause a build-up of fluids in the lungs. more

This is not just with the roadside fruit chaat, this problem exists in ALL kinds of vegetables and fruits sold in local markets who procure them from mandis. As concerned citizens the only option we have is to do a total boycott of all roadside vegetable sellers and instead go for chain outlets such as Godrej, Big Bazaar and others who directly source fruits and vegetables from big farms. There are thousands of small farmers who cultivate vegetables along dirty riverbanks and irrigate them with water from Yamuna that has extremely high quantities of mercury lead and other contaminants from factory effluents and also a high concentration of hydrochloric acid because all the sewage water containing Harpic and other items are directly allowed to flow into the river by the jhuggi jhopdi people. While living in Delhi, I always suffer from dizziness, joint pain and breathlessness. So once or twice a year I go to live in mountain regions for 15 days and the pure vegetables and fruit consumption really helps in partially detoxifying my system and for a few months post that I feel better. more
This is one of the main reasons why FDI in agriculture is necessary because then the companies can be made accountable if their products are found to contain contaminants. At present, any idiot can cultivate a quintal of vegetables and ripen them or polish them in any way he wishes to and sell it off at the mandi or on the roadside and there is no traceability of the source of the food. more
Many people, particularly ladies are interested on road side gup chup and chat. It is very difficult to control them. more
Yes, the only entertainment they want in life is to go to nearby gol gappe wala or pani puri wala. Even if they go to some hill stations, instead of trekking to the forested areas or places with better scenic beauty, they will prefer to stay in the main areas and click photos of themselves having gol gappas. more
Agreed with the idea/comments for avoiding Eating fruit Chaat from roadside vendors/stalls but is it safe to consume the fruit from big restaurant/eating joints as all the fruit ripening process is similar i.e carbide ripening. FSSAI do not bothe about the health of public but on spree to collect money from vendors in name of artificial ripening. more

Amusing indeed to read these posts. We've grown up by eating roadside foods of all kinds and never spent a thought over it. Has our metabolism or our digestive system today become so sensitive and weak that we need to spend thought on protecting ourselves from such foods? As it happens, we had in the past several weeks occasion to visit many places in Rajasthan and in Panjab. In bazaars of each and every one of these cities they are still selling foodstuffs which is exposed to open air.....especially in the vicinity of temples and busy bazaars. Sellers do not use hand-gloves and people relish the foods. In point of fact the consumers' taste buds refuse to take cognisance of what we city folks may be putting up as protest against........viz. cleanliness and hygiene..... Exceptions are naturally individuals who've lived in clean and sterile conditions in western countries and face sickness on consuming foods on Indian soil. Such people would be well advised to keep in touch with mild spices even while living outside of Asian regions.........primarily climate-dictated. Am speaking from personal experience...... more
