New Delhi, Jan. 19 -- India's first defibrillator that prevents sudden cardiac death without plugging into the heart has been implanted on a 48-yearold man at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute.

It lowers chances of infection and injury to the heart and veins, but costs three times as much as the existing defibrillator. Young patients with high lead failure rates due to an active lifestyle will benefit the most from the innovation.

Called the implantable subcutaneous cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD), the device is an electrically active pulse generator connected to a lead that is positioned in the subcutaneous tissue of the chest over the heart. Traditional defibrillators and pacing devices have leads connected to the heart and veins. more

This still does not give the answer i.e. Absolute cost of the machine, Life of machine and/or battery and under what conditions/symptoms/impairments it is recommended. more
Prof Umesh. The News paper write up says that it is recommended for younger people below 50. The cost is 3 times the Normal Traditional defibrilators. more
What is the cost of this subcutaneous defibrillator, cost its implantation and normal life as a whole or its battery replacement? Under what conditions/symptoms/impairments, it is recommended? more
