"No cash" challans are probably introduced as a deterrent for traffic police to take bribes. Let's hope this works. Important would be for the public to also support this decision and not offer bribes "to get away cheaply", like has been the case over the past several decades. Some years ago, I had suggested that all traffic contingent should include both male and female police. My contention is that female police would be fair and uncorrupt. Exceptions, however, would always be there. more
To stop traffic cops bribe, every challan they should have a visual proof, like they give you for over-speeding. Unless they have visual support, they should not challan anyone. And no challan should be settled cash. The issue of corruption is addressed over-night ! Enabling traffic cops team with visual support ( surveillance ) system is not expensive at all these days. For the name sake some cops are provided body cameras, but it more of sham ! ONE, very important point is missing in the policy, what about punishment to the cops, if they are found guilty ?? They should be terminated and not suspended. As suspended cops keep getting half salary and get inducted back after a short-while. Increased penalty is a good idea, as it will curb traffic violence to some extent but this does not stop bribe at all, rather you are making traffic cops getting rich faster. Court challans are rather waste lot of time and very painful as well, if online payment facility is available, then no better solution otherwise. more
How it is going to help or even transform . Do you think this will stop the traffic police from taking bribe ? Yes the increase of rates will force public to follow traffic rules with more and more diligence . more
Unless and until the whole process of identifying the erring drivers /vehicles is automated using the existing and advanced tech like artificial intelligence and face recognition, these measures will remain ineffective. The errant drivers / vehicles should only come to know about their mistake once the E Challan reaches them. The human aspect has to be taken out of the chain. more
If court challans are isued, you would end up wasting a day in the court more
I understand that now one can pay court Challans on line. more
