Good suggestion. Such fine tuning will be useful after some basic requirements are met I have been buying medicines for over 50 years. Except for common items like vicks and balm, I rarely buy medicine on my own. In our family self medication is not practiced. I often wonder how to know if the medicine is genuine. Most medicines are not tested for harmful side effects. Once I was talking to a dean of a large hospital about harm due to medicines. She mentioned that several Ayurveda medicines contain heavy metal like iron, lead, chromium, nickel, and worse Arsenic, bismuth etc. These are harmful on long term usage and no studies for Indian conditions are undertaken. Further, we depend upon clinical studies done in west. These are either by drug company or sponsored by them. Later, I met a retired quality control chap of a large Ayurveda company. I asked about this and he said they do not test for heavy metals any Ayurveda drug. and several contain iron and even arsenic and other oxides. About Clinical tests he just smiled. He agreed with me that public have lot of faith in Ayurveda medicines that it is never harmful and buy based upon lay suggestions or previous usage which may or may not be relevant. Ayurveda medicines are largely sold OTC. Second issue is of spurious drugs which include sub-optimal combinations. In reality there is no control. Most drugs are subcontracted and some of these are notorious about pushing rejected batches into the market and even to hospitals. I have not heard of any action. Of course we also have spurious doctors. I have seen a under-qualified performing surgeries. Most doctors prescribe such a long list of drugs that it is scandalous. Why I am giving these details. We are far from fine tuning our pharmacy sector. more
