They loot us because we can afford and like to be looted! more
Tomato is a seasonal vegetable. In Chennai, February is when tomatoes are cheapest and sell at around Rs 12/- /kg (this year). There were reports of excess production and growers could not even afford to pick it and take the produce to the market and allowed the fruits to go waste. This happens almost every year. In summer it is often not available or the price is too high. This year, due to some manipulation, prices are even higher. But we can live without tomatoes. So why complain? Farmers should set up cooperatives and create cold storage facilities to store excess stocks and get a better price. Preservation and value addition at district level can reduce farmer's problems. They can negotiate with big food product companies which use tomatoes to produce ketchup and set up contracts with them for assured offtake of at least a part of their produce. Instead, they listen to local dynastic politicians and hang themselves. more
Amazing how slowly they have moved from giving convenience to extracting huge profits from us more
Go research how economy works. Grow your own tomatoes. more

There are many such 'farmers-of-convenience' all over India. more
What is harm in "stop eating tomato for a month". There are many commodities we don't eat on regular basis . there are many alternative like lemon, mango powder can replace the tomato in vegetables. more
