overloading of trucks
this is quite a common phenomenon in india from the last 50years...manufacturers,whether,tata/leyland, always provide an extra leeway depending upon the capacity of the truck.but truck owners in order to make additional money overload even beyond this permitted capacity.the ministry of highways and road transport have also prescribed the max load that trucks of differenct tonnage can carry.
organised truck cos like GATI,TVS roadways,etc exercise a lot of restrictions but single truck owners/aggregators are the culprits.
the damage caused to the highways on account of such overloading is phenomenal as our road construction is of poor quality,due to corruption involved in award of contracts as well as usage of inferior quality of materials.
using data analytics,the RTOs can idendtify the predominant routes where this kind of misuse is rampant,employ flying squads and cancel the FC of that vehicle for a certain period of time so that the owner is not able to run the vehicle. more

Sir, A subject worthy of awareness to the common citizen. The trucks are required to carry a certificate from authorised private agents of road side weighing machines (Dharama Kaanta) and can be checked any where by the flying squads of the RTOs (regional transport officer). But it is not practised sincerely and corruption abounds. Not only over loading but loading with awkward merchandise like pre-assembled machine or prefab structures or pipes-steel rods- poles takes place without check. Some loose loads like Hay, Sand , garbage is carried in open trucks /trolleys. In advanced nations no load can be carried in any open carrier. Awkward and huge loads are carried by prime-mover trucks on trolleys with prior information to the authorities who determine the route and timings of ferrying such loads. But in our country even a rural load carrier of trolley pulled by a tractor is used with impunity in urban areas. A drastic change in our attitude of 'chalta hai' is needed. more

Dear Sir, I am not too sure about your assumption that Roads get damaged due to overloading of vehicles passing over them as roads are not designed with specific vehicles in mind. They are designed based on hypothetical vehicles, whose loading parameters are standardized. However, it is necessary to control overloading and even confiscate such vehicles but in general provincial governments are corrupt and Revenue, Stamps & Registration, Police and transport are notorious among their departments. Thus, it is a big ask. more

Another instance of damaging the road by overloaded vehicles is the Cement mixing trucks which carry concrete to construction site. They overload their trucks. When the truck is going uphill or standing at red light the concrete spills on the road and solidifies within minutes creating treacherous lumps on an otherwise flat road. Even cops who stand and witness this sort of abuse standby as mute spectators! The agency who is in charge of maintaining the road does not recognise this abuse as damage and so does nothing! Motorists suffer and some of them lose their lives. Everybody consider this as just another accident without realising how easily it can be averted. more

RTO are also full of corrupt people & so also the police force who accompany the RTO official.I remember the police personal ask for specific posting on the roads where these checks are carried out by paying bribe.Political patronage is also rampant.We have to have people with integrity & loyality,that's the way out.Nothing else will work more

Corruption and political patronage are the real culprits. Truck operators pay huge donations/bribes to rule the roads. Even the tractor trolleys are over loaded with farm produce/waste and no police force detains them. Overloading leads to accidents and damage to roads/bridges. There is no law in place to end this menace in every State. Unless State Governments are willing to end corruption, nothing is going to change. more
