Paan as a digestive or drug - study :

Is Paan to be included in the Subject Food & Nutrition ?

or Scheduled Drugs ?

or psychotropic drugs ?

or illicit / banned drugs ?

or should it be left as it is ?

Should it come under FSSAI or Drug Control ? We are in a tricky situation.

The opinion we get from the citizens about Paan :

* it is used as a digestive for ages after a good meal so it is a food item.

* Cultural to offer at Functions .

* The red colour seen on the lips and tongue indication that the Guest is going back satisfied .

These beliefs are about Paan that was taken conventionally which contained mainly the Beetle leaves, nut , sugar crystals, somf, Jeera, dried seeds of some fruits , saffron . Absolutely aids digestion ,harmless. From time immemorial Beetle & beetle nuts were considered good for digestion after a good and heavy meal; at weddings and functions and parties .

How often do we have these occasions ?
on all 365 days?

What are the ingredients added into today’s commercial paan and paan masala that is available for consumption ?

In addition to the conventional harmless ingredients mentioned earlier, tobacco , and other mood altering ingredients are added . This practice is from the Moghul era where the kings used to consume . We have fallen for that .

SO THE PRESENT FORM OF PAAN THAT IS AVAILABLE IS NO MORE JUST A FOOD ITEM OR USED FOR DIGESTION ALONE .
AS THERE ARE OTHER INGREDIENTS THAT COME UNDER DRUGS, NARCOTIC SUBSTANCE , PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS , ILLEGAL / BANNED DRUGS, IT SHOULD ALSO COME UNDER THE PURVIEW OF THE DRUG CONTROL AUTHORITY , NARCOTIC CONTROL BUREAU ,ILLICIT DRUGS . Jai Hind more

If "Paan" does not contain any thing like tobacco or any other chemical - it is ok. more
There is an Ayurvedic method on how to make a "trayodashguni vida" i.e., paan having thirteen virtues! But again, one has to ensure the ingredients are pure!! more
Now we have a fashion of seeking scientific evidence for every thing. The practices and products established for centuries are being questioned for Scientific evidence prior to their official approval. Is is possible to do it for all existing food and related products ? pan (Beetle leaf chewing) is one of those items. It is better to believe and consume ( and take benefits) or wait for science to establish it otherwise. By that time one may find a way to heavenly abode. more
From ancient times paan (betel leaf) has been in use as a digestive and to derive this benefit paan needs to be chewed along with small quantity of betel nut and a small lime paste. In fact the juice of paan mixed with lime works as a digestive. Other ingredients like, tobacco etc. are taken along with paan to give a different taste and have nothing to do with the digestion and make people addictive. Paan has many other medicinal quality. While its juice helps in stopping bleeding, its application on the nerves of both sides of the forehead along with lime paste helps getting relief from severe headache. Dipping a piece of lime stone in water overnight and drinking a glass of such water empty stomach in the morning cures various stomach problems. Hence, chewing sada (simple) paan with small battle nut & lime paste after each meal would certainly help in digestion. One can try it today. more
There is a constant deterioration in all the walks of life. Ethical values r diminishing with commercial interests. Paan is one such transformation today from its age-old benefits of digestion with just betel leaves n nuts etc. to masalas n other ingredients for various other pleasures. more
