Pain Relief - When to use what

Sprays: Sprays can be excellent for hard-to-reach spots like your back. The spray provides a highly pressurised force of cooling menthol that quickly numbs the pain. The best part about using a spray is that it does not have a messy drip or a greasy feeling. Sprays offer immediate pain relief and so are more helpful in dealing with acute pain like an ankle sprain after an injury.

Ointments: There are two types of ointments. The ones which contain capsaicin and work by causing burning and skin irritation to some degree, increasing the blood supply to that area, providing relief. The burning of the skin is in a controlled manner. However, if the irritation persists after a certain limit, you must avoid its use and consult a doctor. The other variety of ointment contains aspirin-like substances and menthol, which relieves pain. Ointments can be helpful in treating dull aching pain. Don’t use it if you have chronic pain.

Creams: The pain-relieving creams are usually less greasy than ointments. Creams are very effective in relieving arthritic pain, but they can only provide temporary relief. Most creams contain counterirritants which can heat the skin and distract the brain from the pain. A common compound capsaicin found in pain-relieving creams block the skin’s pain receptors and thus reduces the pain. If there is any swelling, try using ice-packs.

Foams: Foams can be spread more quickly than creams. They are a non-greasy and non-drip formula that starts working within seconds of application. All you need to do is spray a little foam on your finger tips or palm and then gently massage it into the skin. The scent vanishes quickly, but the product continues to provide up to eight hours of long lasting relief. They can be best used for pain in neck and shoulders.

Gels: Gels are a less greasy version of creams and ointments, but they can easily dry out your skin especially if the product is alcohol-based. Most gels contain counterirritants that combine the sensations of cold and hot for a healing relief. Most of these products contain menthol that cools the area and capsaicin that delivers heat to give pain relief for up to eight hours. Gels can be used to relief shoulder, upper, and lower back pain.

Roll-ons: Roll-ons are easy to apply on your skin. The roller allows application without the need to use your hands. Roll-ons quickly absorb into the skin and can provide relief within 15-20 minutes. They can be used for chronic pain relief in neck, shoulder, wrists, lower back and hips. more

Thanks Ms.Vijay Nair for useful information. Kindly guide, which two of them can be kept at home for emergency measure or regular use. A no. of people tell that rubbing a good oil viz Maha Narayan Tel and many other oil by Ayurvedic companies also give a good relief. Further rubbing any oil at pain sight and giving a circular motion by fingers/palm also gives a lot of relief. Sometimes these oils, ointments, creams, gels etc are not fully effective andtake some time. For mild pain and fever one or two Paracetamol two or three times a day may be helpful. If pain is more with inflammation and fever, Diclopara or Aceclopara is more effective. If their is swelling also, Diclopara/Aceclpara+ Serratiopaptidase will be more useful. If there is muscle dislocation, Diclopara/Acelopara+ Clorzoxazon is quite effective. All two times a day after meals. If acidity is there an antacid may also be taken with above tablets (Ranitidine 150). The oral medicines with local application will give faster relief. Kindly note that excess use or prolonged use of above medicines have side effects on working of kidneys. more

Very nice article. It really solves the problem of immediate pain. However it is an external treatment and is not permanent. How to cure all joint, back or knee pain permanently? The answer lies in real certified organic food to which many may call "Ayurved" but the use of chemicals in production of flowers, fruits and vegetables have nullified the effect of Ayurved too. Pure organic food works on the cell level (where even the medicines also does not work) neutralizing the effect of free radicals caused in the body due to chemicals as organic food provides anti oxidants to make the cells healthy once again. The 'Phyto-nutrients' in the organic food provides anti oxidants. We are working on the wellness of hundreds of people and many lifestyle diseases are getting cured too.
