Painful rail travel

Rail travel in India, esp during festivals, continues to be painful. The wait is endless, first for tickets, then for trains. Some delayed more than 10 hrs. Fancy VandeBharat 2 hrs late so far! No sign yet! Most trains overflowing wit atleast 3X more ppl than seats more

Potential Solutions to Improve Rail Travel: 1. Improved Ticketing Systems: Upgraded IRCTC Platform: The Indian Railways needs to invest in upgrading the IRCTC website and mobile app to handle high traffic efficiently. Implementing better server infrastructure and redundant systems can help prevent crashes during peak times. Quota System for Popular Routes: Introduce a quota system for highly popular routes during festivals, where a certain percentage of tickets are set aside for regular travelers, first-time travelers, or specific categories (e.g., senior citizens or students). Better Anti-Scalping Measures: The government should step up efforts to prevent ticket scalping. This could include implementing rigorous checks during the booking process and introducing penalties for those caught reselling tickets illegally. 2. Train Punctuality and Regularity: Dedicated Festival Trains: One way to reduce the strain on the regular train network is by introducing special trains during festivals, with an increase in the number of trips or additional coaches added to existing trains. Improved Train Operations: The Indian Railways could invest in better tracking systems for real-time updates on train delays and make sure trains run on time during the peak season. Dedicated teams could be set up to monitor and address delays immediately. 3. Better Station Infrastructure and Amenities: Expanded Facilities: Upgrading station infrastructure is essential to handle the crowds. This includes improving the number of platforms, seating arrangements, public restrooms, drinking water stations, and shelters. Enhanced Crowd Management: Stations should have efficient crowd management systems, with dedicated staff to guide passengers and prevent stampedes. Better security checks and queue management can also improve the overall experience. 4. Enhanced Safety and Security: Increased Police Presence: During peak travel times, an increased police presence at stations and on trains is essential to ensure the safety of passengers. This could also help with managing overcrowding and preventing accidents. Train Ticket Verification: Stringent ticket verification at the station platforms to ensure only ticketed passengers board the trains can prevent illegal travel, reducing overcrowding. 5. More Efficient Communication Systems: Timely Updates: The Indian Railways should provide real-time updates regarding train schedules, delays, or cancellations through SMS, mobile apps, and station announcements. This will help passengers plan their journeys better and reduce frustration during travel. Advance Booking for Festival Seasons: Encouraging passengers to book tickets well in advance for festivals can help reduce last-minute rushes. Additionally, introducing pre-booking for specific festivals months ahead can help alleviate the pressure. 6. Introduction of High-Speed and Alternate Rail Services: Dedicated High-Speed Rail: Given the immense pressure on the current network, the government could look at introducing high-speed rail corridors for long-distance routes to provide an alternative to overburdened trains. Privatization of Certain Routes: The government could consider privatizing select routes to improve efficiency, punctuality, and customer service on those lines. Private operators may bring in better management and innovation in services, as seen in the Vande Bharat Express and other premium services. Conclusion: Rail travel during festivals in India can be an arduous and frustrating experience, but with a combination of technology upgrades, better infrastructure, and improved operational practices, the situation can be improved. For millions of people who depend on Indian Railways for long-distance travel, these reforms are essential to ensure a safer, more efficient, and comfortable travel experience during peak periods. more
Indian Railways is unable to cope up with our 1.40 billion people. Moreover, in the name of modernization of the tracks since last 3/4 years, the railways has resorted to cancel enormous numbers of trains all over the country either without any prior notice or with prior notice of short period disrupting & dislocating the entire system and making train journey painful & full of uncertainty. Meanwhile, the credentials of the organisation have come down to the lowest ebb. more
